Living nearby, I've been coming here for years, mostly to drink & socialise but occasionally to eat. Sadly, when it comes to food, the Clarence has had a chequered history. Recently though, after the arrival of new tenants, Darrell & Kath Tarkenter, things have changed. There is a seasonal menu which isn't too large or fussy. Everything is locally sourced, prepared & cooked on the premises and delightfully presented. I've eaten here with family and friends several times this year. Everything from Christmas dinner to our son's 21st (his particular request). So, between us, we must have eaten the entire menu. Everyone (young to old) loved every dish. I love my meat but it must be lean! The meat in the pies/puddings is tasty, melts in the mouth and is beautifully lean. My particular favourites are Rag Pudding and Steak & Ale Pie (which has the lightest puff pastry I've ever had). If what you want is good, honest, delicious pub food then I recommend the Clarence very highly.
