“We got there in the end!”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

We tried to get in here a month or so ago whilst out walking and it was full! The last time I had been in here a year or so before it was empty! Tonight we rang out of the blue and they could fit us in. Again the pub was quite full with a selection of customers - eating, just having a drink and some playing dominoes! The service was really good, very pleasant girls waiting on, and a friendly barman. The food was plentiful and very tasty and a reasonable price! A special mention for the white chocolate cheesecake - absolutely scrumptious!!!!! We will definately be back - thank you.

“Birthday celebration”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

We held the family celebration for our daughter's eighteenth birthday at the Black Bull as it was a convenient location for grandparents. There were twenty five of us so we had almost exclusive use of the dining area. The staff and managers could not have been more helpful or patient, both when arranging the meal and during the meal itself. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere, which was what my daughter wanted. It would not perhaps be 'special' enough for someone who wanted a more formal, fancy celebration. The beer was excellent apparently ( I was not drinking alcohol) and the food ( both main courses and dessert) was of a very good standard. The guests most of the dishes on the menu, including the vegetarian casserole, and really enjoyed them all. All the pies were highly praised. The only minor criticism was that the roast dinners were probably not at the same very high standard of the other dishes. The beef and turkey was a little bit dry. I would however highly recommend The Black Bull as it was easily one of the nicest places we have dined at in Bury and we would be very pleased to eat and drink there again.

“Amazing value”
Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

Great pub, well established and always packed . The carvery is amazing value especially if like us you have grown up kids where taking them out is always expensive. Fab for vegetarians but I wish they had a bit more choice in the veggie alternative for the carvery. Nice family atmosphere. It's always busy when we've been and you can wait around a bit for service. On the whole , this pub has responses well to the economic downturn by offering home ish cooking at a do-able price.

Hi
Think you may have the wrong pub here as we do not do a carvery, our food is all home cooked, and you very rarely have to wait long for service. Are you referring to the Bulls Head in Greenmount maybe?

“Best pub grub in Bury”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

We have been visiting the Black Bull for a couple of years now on a regular basis and have had many very enjoyable lunches there. The menu, though not extensive, is imaginative, with the dishes superbly prepared and cooked on the premises, all presented to a high standard. Choices include an oak smoked Salmon and prawn salad, pies such as a "boozy steak" pie, smoked fish pie, Christine's "cheesy" pie, Thai fish cakes, chicken and chorizo pasta, sirloin steak, a spicy Jalfrezi curry, in addition to the ubiquitous burgers, scampi and an excellent fish and chips. There is also a specials board of, maybe, four dishes. The deserts are a must for self indulgence, gloriously so. Over a dozen visits and not a bad meal.
Considering the standard of food it is very good value. The table service is first class, friendly but very efficient and attentive, especially so as two of our diners are in wheelchairs.
Space is limited and the Black Bull is popular so best to book ahead.
