I have lived near the Black Bull almost all my life and it has always been a dodgy old mans pub, not so now! It has been beatifully refurbished, they have real ales on, it is warm and comfortable, the food is excellent, the portion sizes are decent, though not too big for you not to manage all 3 courses, the staff are lovely and always make you feel welcome. The prices are reasonable, they do a small portion size of many of the dishes for children (I always prefer that as it annoys me when pubs and restaurants fob children off with cheap rubbish while adults eat the quality), they buy the ingredients from a local supplier - yes that's right ingredients, not ready made meals.
This pub really is a lesson to others in how to do it well and other pubs in the vincinity (e.g. the Rose and Crown on the opposite side of the road) would do well to take note.
However, as this pub is now so perfect you have no chance of wandering in and getting a table on the off chance and booking is essential, sometimes weeks in advance.
