“Birthday treat at the Village”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2008

We have just returned from a two night stay at the Village hotel in Bury. The location was picked as we have friends who live near by. I was slightly nervous due to the not so brilliant reviews on TA, but I found a great deal on Laterooms which was 2 nights B and B, with dinner on the first night for £139 (for the 2 of us!), which I thought was a bit of a steal. The meals were lovely and the bed was comfortable and there was full use of the health club which included a swimming pool, sauna and a steam room. Great if you can get it at the right price!

We stayed for three nights over a bank holiday weekend. Initial impressions are good with an attractive foyer and dining area. The bedroom was an identikit hotel room - extremely bland and exactly like hotel rooms everywhere.
All the staff we came into contact with were friendly and helpful. The leisure facilities were excellent and clean although we only used the pool.
Ok, now for the not so good. It may be coincidence but on all three evenings, the hotel's bars seemed to be swamped with the local low-life. On returning to the hotel later in the evening, we had to battle with 45 year old skinheads arguing with staff about getting drinks after 11:00 (cutoff for non residents). There was a pool of vomit by the main doors. The number of staff on duty in the evenings was woefully inadequate, reflected in all the tables inside and out being covered in empty glasses bottles and litter. There was a broken glass on the ground by the front door, left for at least an hour.
The foyer and bar on all three evenings was full of people drunkenly singing and people holding others up who were just about to be ill.
Perhaps this was not reflective of the hotel normally but none of the staff seemed to bat an eyelid.
Other things: the breakfast is very average. On one morning, again there were not enough staff and (I'm not joking), there was no coffee, no butter, no orange juice, nowhere to sit and hardly any cereals. The sausages looked and tasted as though they were padded out with asbestos.
Also worth pointing out that this is the sort of hotel where people have pints of lager with their breakfasts - we saw that twice.
All in all, disappointing and just not suitable for families wanting to relax in a civilised environment.

  • Liked — Pleasant staff, everything kept clean except during the evenings.
  • Disliked — Feeling physically intimidated by loud drunks. In the evenings, the place was a mess.

Outside very grand. Good location. Public spaces very chic. Breakfast buffet very good, though for some reason my "toast" was carbonised to the extent that I wasn't sure if it should be eaten or used as charcoal for a barbecue.

It was the bed that did it though. It was a single bed on a divan with the rigidity of lettuce teetering on wheels so that ever small move during the night caused an alarming amount of movement. It was like trying to sleep on an enormous blancmange, with every small flinch threatening to throw you on the floor.

The staff didn't ask how my night was, which was pretty lucky for everybody concerned.

I'm back next week and will insist on a double bed. Failing which, I shall drag my mattress down stairs and sleep in reception!

The Hotel is part of the De Vere group oddly I have an aversion to "corparate hotels" I do not know why and it is irrational as most places are.
Any way I was quite surprised the room was standard nothing special nothing adverse either. The leisure facilities are fine sauna steam room gyms pool etc.
What seperated this hotel was the staff they are genuinly friendly and helpful. As I was attending a function i cant comment oin the restaurant save to say thet the menu at the function was fine the bar wsas not a rip off which is what normally mars a place.
Access is ideal straight off the m66 junction 2.

2 Rooms had been booked for 2 people of the same company, however when it came to the night of the stay 1 person managed to check in and the other person was transferred to a De Vere hotel 20 MILES AWAY!!!! as they were over booked. Totally unexceptable when people have travelled for a long period of time that day and also had a meeting room booked for a meeting the following morning. I noticed that other reviews noted over booking also. What a sham!
