Owner description: Located in Bury, just 30 minutes from Manchester City Centre, is the award-winning East Lancashire Railway. A heritage railway that runs steam and diesel train services through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do and stations are well equipped for group visits with cafes, pubs, gift shops and a dedicated Transport Museum, housing vintage vehicles, transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits. Guided tours and talks are also available. The railway also has some fantastic events scheduled throughout the year from guided Rail Ale Trail tours of some of the excellent local drinking spots to the nostalgia of their award winning 1940's weekend. Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in a luxury steam train hauled dining experience on board Orient Express style carriages, learn to drive a train or get snap happy with a Photography Course?

For kids it's a good treat to be on an old fashioned steam train. For adults - a bit boring, but worth it just to see my grandson's happy face.

Another weekend well spent . Once again East Lancs Railway held their 40's wekend , all along their line from Heywood to Rawtenstall . Re-enactors in period costume & uniforms , children taking p[art with their parents , many many photo opportunities . Even the weather was kind for most of the weekend , when it did finally rain , most people adopted the old wartime spirit & soldiered on regardless .

There are battle re-enactments on each day at various points along the railway ALL FREE to watch , BUT as the weapons are real the sounds can be very louds so be warned . The ENSA style entertainers add much atmosphere to the weekend as well on many levels .

Mnay people give theri time to make this a very enjoyable event , Thank you to them for their hard work & dedication

What a very professional train company. We had a rover ticket so could go and visit a very interesting, light and airy museum containing a whole range of old commercial vehicles. The kids would love it. Then we caught the steam train and had a great time jumping off and on the hourly trains up and down the line. There was plenty of time to look round the towns and for us being a 'Rail ale gang' time to sample various brews! The staff, be it in the museum, on the platform or the trains were very knowledgeable and would spend time explaining/answering any questions you might have. A great day out for the kids and grown up kids as well!

So many cakes! have not been so overwhelmed by sweet things for ages! A great way to spend a rainy afternoon in Manchester, sipping a lovely cup of tea, eating cakes while being steamed through the countryside in a vintage 1st class carriage all the while being pulled by a proper steam engine
