Owner description: Located in Bury, just 30 minutes from Manchester City Centre, is the award-winning East Lancashire Railway, a heritage railway that runs steam and diesel train services through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do and stations are well equipped for group visits with cafés, pubs, gift shops and a dedicated Transport Museum, housing vintage vehicles, transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits. Guided tours and talks are also available. The railway also has some fantastic events scheduled throughout the year from guided Rail Ale Trail tours of some of the excellent local drinking spots to the nostalgia of their award winning 1940's weekend. Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in a luxury steam train hauled dining experience on board Orient Express style carriages, learn to drive a train or get snap happy with a Photography Course?

“Great Christmas trip!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

This is the second year we have done the Santa special and it was as good this year as it was last year. The platform has a little buffet where you can get tea, coffee, pies, crisps, cold drinks etc., all reasonably priced. The train ride is great with Santa and his helpers coming along to see the passengers and some musicians passing through getting the carriage to sing carols. The length of the journey from Bury to Rawtenstall and back is just right in terms of younger children not getting bored! I would recommend this as a Christmas treat, book early as they sell out fast (especially at peak times). Also, if you're driving, give yourself plenty of time to find parking as it is not great around the Station itself. The car park at the leisure centre nearby is usually worth a try.

The East Lancashire Railway offers a variety of dining experiences on their fleet of restored Steam Trains runnig through the lovely East Lancs countryside.

Service and food are of the highest order and for a 'Steam Enthusiast' it's a real treat.

“Nostalgic enjoyment”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012

We have recently spent the best part of a day travelling up and down the line on the steam railway followed by a visit to the transport museum opposite which was included in the price. All the staff were frienly and helpful and we had a lovely day out. Its ideal for any age groups and all the children we saw were really excited. Someone has commented that it isnt a cheap day out but with all the work and expense that must be needed to keep the line open and engines maintained we thought it was very good.
