“Hunting "Wotever's Next" in the Hopshires”
Reviewed November 6, 2013 via mobile

Overpriced but in quaint surroundings. Food was good, vegetarians catered for but the focus is game, fish and local produce. Breakfast was generous. The pub also brews real ale with names like This, That, T'Other which are served from cask & authentic using local hops but to my taste buds lacking in depth. There are 5 beers available bottle conditioned at £8 for 3 or £24 for 12. Unfortunately there is no provision to get a deal on 6. It was also a pleasure to meet some of the locals at the bar during the eveningand there was a particularly helpful Australian barmaid.

We love the Talbot as a pub, beer, wine ambience and staff are great, BUT we recently stayed overnight and had a very mixed experience! The room was clean and the bed very comfortable, but there's 'quirky' and then there's downright 'mish-mash and tired'. We got the latter - not really on for £100 a night! We were expecting great things at breakfast and we got some - the eggs, the sausages and the home made preserves. However, the bacon may have been good quality but it was so thinly cut and overdone we couldn't really tell. On the other hand the home made bread (whole meal, no white offered) was so lightly toasted we had to send it back. What a pity the standard varied so much! Perhaps time to spend some money on the bedrooms in their 25th year!

Room Tip: Ask to have a look at them all!

Lovely quaint old inn. We had a very nice room, complete with sloping floor and creaking boards, but the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom (shower room really) was modern and perfectly adequate. Good food in the evening, with a choice of eating in the pub area or in the restaurant. Real ales on tap in the bar. Breakfast good but service slow.

There is fear in some quarters that the family owned inn which has real memorabilia on the walls and ceilings. rather than items selected by a marketing department, is going the way of the dinosaur. I stumbled across the Talbot whilst in the area on other business; sadly my visit was limited to 90 minutes at lunchtime however I'm already arranging to go back and stay for a night or two or three.

What is not to like? An excellent menu with the best cooking I experienced in the 7 days trip. An onsite brewery with wonderfully named beers; as a driver I was confined to a bitter shandy but next time......

Wonderful walking country to explore in what has to be one of England's relatively hidden river valleys. And, to cap it all, fishing rights for course and game.

The Talbot has been run by the same family for over 20 years and on the strength of my visit I wish they every success in the next 20; they and their staff deserve nothing less!

I have been to the talbot on a few occasions mainly I go in the lounge as the bar seems quite busy. On this particular night we decided to use the bar as the lounge was quite quiet. Mistake! A guy called Frank I believe his name is was very, very drunk, abusive to myself grabbing parts of my body which is totally out of order. I don't even know him, his tone was aggressive and also very insulting. One of his friends told him to go home as he was out of order. He told them to f of and he was a c.... my daughter who is only 9 was quite upset about the whole thing. Does anyone know where he lives as I want to make a formal complaint to the police.

Stayed here one night whilst walking through the area. Arrived late afternoon and the place was very busy with locals and visitors enjoying the sunshine and ales. The Inn has a large popular outdoor area.
[After being shown my room I enquired about doing a couple more miles and the bar lady immediately offered to run me in her car to the next village. I was back in time to buy her a drink!]
In the evening the place was very busy and the bar area a bit of a crush with drink and food orders. The regulars seem to be clique and threaten to take over. The staff however remained helpful and courteous. Lots of areas to eat in. My bar snack was average.
The bed room was ample, clean and well appointed. Slept well.
Breakfast was taken in a new open dining area, great on a lovely sunny morning. Plenty of fresh fruit and generous portions. No complaints.
Again one of the kindly staff offered me a lift back to the next village. Good start to the day.Thanks.
A very nice place to stay, Rather expensive for food but no doubt par for the course in this area.

What a marvellous place! From the sarcastic maitre d' who welcomed me and my rucksack with "You've walked from where? That's not very far!", to the young man behind the bar who immediately lined up taster-sized helpings of house ales This, That and T'other when I enquired (particularly recommend the That), to the generously-sized, topsy-turvey, flooded-with-natural-light room, to the not-inexpensive-but-decent-quality bar menu, to the acres of outdoor seating for those rare warm summer evenings... This place is a gem. Bus every couple of hours (daytimes only, and not at all on Sundays, unfortunately) on the Worcester-Bromyard-Hereford route.
