“Great little museum”

Owner description: Located inside Stour Vale Mill, a beautiful Grade 2 listed building. The Mill was built in 1855 as a carpet factory and until recently it was part of Woodward Grosvenor, carpet manufacturers. We are the only museum in the country that is devoted to carpets and carpet making. Kidderminster has had close association with the carpet industry from the 1700s. The Carpet Museum Trust was established in 1981. As the industry contracted, the Trust began to collect machinery, artefacts, archives and libraries from the numerous firms in the town. The Trust now has a good collection of machinery showing the important stages in the technical development of carpet making as well as ancillary equipment. There are collections of archives in a variety of forms, ledgers, board minutes, deeds, accounts that have also been acquired from many of the companies around the town. There is also a collection of around 3000 carpet designs, many by significant designers such as Charles Voysey, Edouard Glorget and Bernat Klein. The samples of rugs and carpets illustrate most of the types of carpets, the different fibres and dyes, and the changing styles of design.

“Great little museum”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Exciting to get a new museum and this was much better than expected with some fun hands on bits, knowledgable volunteers and lots more information panels than you might expect. Nice to see a lovely building being put to use as well as the looms! Still in the process of being put together so will be nice to go back when they've filled all their display cases and cabinets.

Thanks for the positive review. We certainly like getting these and we seem to get them from most of our visitors,so we're pleased you like what we offer.

If you haven't been for along time, why not pop back over the summer months as our new exhibition, Podtastic Podules, opens on 25 July and offers a fascinating, tactile, textile day out! See our website for more details.

“History of Carpets in Kidderminster”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Demonstration by weaver using a loom was fascinating. and friendliness of staff was very welcoming. The volunteer who demonstrated the weaving made a very difficult job look second nature,

It is a brilliant museum for Kidderminster and the carpet industry.

Many thanks for reviewing us. Yet again we're proud to receive the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for receiving 5 Star reviews from our visitors. Your comments have helped us achieve this award so thank you.

We're always keen to hear feedback, especially when it's from people who were surprised by what they saw. We do like to confound visitors by being so much better than they had imagined.

If you're in the area, then why not considered coming along in July when we're running our new exhibition, Podtastic Podules, giant textile shapes that you can climb in and out of! Ideal for children - big or small - it runs until 25 September.

“Bit of a gem, really!”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

Small museum, recently opened, not very well advertised locally but is in part of old mill attached to Morrisons. Staff seemed surprised that we wanted to visit the museum, we were the only people there but they were extremely helpful and friendly. Museum has very clear pictorial and written history of carpet making in the area and has working exhibits but not on the day we were there. If you like to learn something of the local area's history (as I do), this museum is a must!

“Colourful and fascinating”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

This museum, next to Morrisons, is in a splendidly restored and wonderful building.Inside the place looks clean, airy and colourful. The looms are amazing and it is rather important to go there when they are being operated. There are plenty of interactive exhibits which I enjoyed, even if they may have been intended for children. There seems to be room for expansion and I would hope they may expand their small section on carpet design through the ages. There are no toilets and no cafe actually inside the museum but those in Morrisons supermarket (which is attached to and partly integrated with the museum) are easily available a few steps away. This is well worth a visit if you have ever owned a carpet - and it also acts as an important local history museum for Kidderminster.
