Living just down the road we used to use Brockencote a lot. Then it changed hands and they did a great job of the refurbishment, turning the hotel and restaurant much more "boutiquey". We went on a Monday night, only booking at around 5pm and had a very strange experience. We asked for a table at 7.30, we were offered a table at 6.45 for 7.15 or 7.45 for 8.15. We opted early and when we were taken to the restaurant we found ourselves eating alone. Another couple arrived half an hour later and then a table of 8 around 45 minutes after that. What a load of nonsense!!
The food is good. We were given canapes in the lounge with our drinks and they were creative and delicious. We went off the cheaper menu and every course was delicious but this place is now very expensive. At over £40 for 3 courses for the cheap menu and almost £60 for the more extensive menu, you would expect the food to be stunning. It's good but not stunning. We found house wines that were reasonably priced (around £21) but we used to come and drink Sancerre and quality Bordeaux at reasonable prices, not anymore. This place has become somewhere that you only go to as a treat, and although it has always been that kind of establishment to some extent, the introduction of the Garden Menu early week (by the previous owners) made it a quality option from a Sunday to Wednesday. Not anymore, which might explain why it wasn't that busy.
