“birthday treat”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

wanted to treat hubby to a night away in Bewdley. Been to west midland safari park which is fantastic and had a free return visit so wanted somewhere close. Also wanted to spend a few hours on the local steam train but when we arrived at Mug House the sun was shining so as so rare this year sat outside the Inn which is on the river watching the world go but with a few beers. Then spent pleasant hour walking along the riverfront. We had Rose room which was at the front overlooking the river...too many knick knacks for my liking(worried about breaking something) but was spacious and clean. We ate at there restaurant and the food was really good and for a tuesday night was nearly full. Lots of locals in the bar which is a very good sigh.
Breakfast was superb...locally sourced produce..home made yogurt. Set us up for a day round safari park(in the rain!!!)
Highly recommend mainly for the location, friendly staff and fantastic food

Superb spot in delightful Bewdley, right on the river frontage. We called in for Lunch on a very rainy day. Very comfortable and welcoming and a big bonus was that although it was raining it was quite warm and their outside seating area is under cover and quite pretty with a small fish pond. We only wanted only a snack and all 4 of us chose either a cheese and onion or cheese and pickle sandwich. It turned out not to be just a snack but great wedges of crusty brown bread full to overflowing with a really good sharp cheese, home made crisps on the side and a really tasty chopped, well dressed salad. None of us wanted our dinner until 8.00 that night. Was also good friendly service and and an amiable atmosphere well done the Mug house.

We stayed here while celebrating good friends wedding nearby. They have a small number of rooms, we were in Daffodil which is above the pub and a nice spacious room with plenty of character and lots of homely touches. For our taste its perhaps time to update the decor, bedding and curtains but if you like country kitsch it may be just for you.
Our friends took up the other rooms in the inn and all gave good reports of their rooms over breakfast with varying amusement levels on how they coped with features (sloping floors etc) after many glasses of bubbly. From their reports the Rose Room seemed to be the most appealing, with a four poster bed.
The breakfast was excellent, with freshly cooked full English, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs etc, fresh croissants, thickly cut toast, quality yoghurts, etc all with excellent service. Bewdley is a lovely spot for a weekend away and the Mug House is right on the river front just perfect to enjoy the setting, watch the rowing club setting out, enjoy a meal or potter round the quaint shops.

Maybe not the most glamorous or modern accommodation but cosy and relaxed, I'd happily stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for the Rose Room

We had a lovely stay at the Mug House; having a room in the cottage next to the pub. We staying in cottage 2 (1st floor) ... a huge room with double bed and single bed, private en suite large bathroom and river views. The cottage was quiet and although there are people around till late at night the clientelle for this pub, I would suggest is aged 45+ and are not rowdy put goers. The pub itself is very welcoming and has a relaxed atmosphere even though it can get quite busy.

The breakfast was fantastic with lots to choose from and fresh fruit, yogurt with fruit compote and the usual cereal, grapefruit, toast, fruit juice etc etc.

The staff were very helpful and would thoroughly recommend. The main building as rooms as well and a four poster (if you were looking for a romantic get-away).

PS - was surprised that one reviewer was worried about the parking. This car park is very well lit and is used not only by day visitors but also (due to the parking restrictions in the town) by local residents who purchase annual paking permits. I wouldn't let this put you off at all and have never had a problem with his aspect of visiting or staying in Bewdley.

Room Tip: All of the cottage rooms have river views. Cottage 2 on the 1st floor would be my recommendation du...

For:The location overlooking the river Severn, the olde world feel and the welcome were excellent. The evening food and wine in the restaurant was superb and the breakfast (included) was also good. The ground floor room in an adjacent house was relatively light and spacious with table and chairs: the beds were comfortable if a little soft. The bathroom was also quite large with facilities/accessibility for those physically challenged. The setting in this historic original Georgian town with surrounding countryside full of wonderful walks is truly wonderful; a slice of real rural England.
Against: The check-in is quite late (3pm) and the breakfast equally late at the weekends (9am) for those travellers wishing to get off (but why would you wish to leave?). There was no bath and the shower head was badly in need of replacement. There is no parking but they do provide a badge that allows free parking in a nearby municipal lot. Could potentially be noisy as people leave the restaurant but they finish at about 11pm.

Room Tip: facing the river is best

Friends suggested we go for a pre-wedding planning meeting and the evening was a great success.
The "Angry Chef" 2 courses for 12.95 was excellent value with a good range of choice as well as a couple of market specials. My choice of mussels, creamy and excellent as well as light batter on the perfect cod with beautiful chips. The Mug House steak and ales came in mugs with an excellent pastry hat to eat the dish in.
Service was spot on, attentive, retentive but not pushy.
We are "local" but tended to eat in the countryside. We've now added the Mug House to our list of good places to eat. It would be delightful by the river on a summers day.
