“First time visit.”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

Weather was wet and blustery,so what a delightful excuse to step inside this establishment. My parents and i departed the restaurant area ninety minutes later after sampling the soups, tomato and basil, leek and potato, accompanied with thick soft white bread that added to the body warming experience. They also consumed sandwiches ham and cheese respectively, whilst i ordered the burger, dressed with cheese and bacon, saddled alongside what was simply the best french fries i have digested in many a year.Overall a most appetising participation that included courteous customer service. This is one dining path that i shall certainly navigate in the not too distant future.

“So disappointed.”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

We would love to find a friendly local pub that also sells good food.

When the new owners of the Pilot Boat sent out their initial flyer it offered an imaginative and appetising menu which comprised healthy options to the 'chips with everything' so prevalent in English pub food.

The first time we visited we found the owners very friendly, but almost everything on the menu was 'off' because they had been unusually busy that day. However, they gave us two chgoices if we could wait half an hour. So we did, but the resultant food was so poor that we wished they'd sent us away because the cupboard was bare and the chef tired out.. Instead of the piles of golden chips we'd seen others enjoying, we had a piece of dried chicken with a few limp, greasy chips. So we tried again last Friday, and as usual got a cheery welcome.
Again we saw piled plates of appetising food, with lots of big, golden hand-cut chips (now, apart from rice with curry, the only option on the cut-down menu (which we fully understand, having been in the catering trade ourselves|).
So we ordered chicken parmigiana, which we were assured came with hand cut chips and a side salad.

We waited, and we waited, until I had to remind the landlord. We were told if we waited until he'd fed a table of five ours would be next. The loaded plates went out to the five, but when ours arrived the chicken pieces were very small, and there was a thin scattering of what were obviously frozen packet chips which were covered in grease. The 'salad' was a few leaves and three half slices of cucumber, plus the thinnest wedge of tomato it was possible to cut. It was obvious they had overlooked our order.
We had hoped to make this our local, where we could eat probably once a week, but we now feel that 'our faces must not fit' and are disinclined to try for 'third time lucky'. It is a real shame. It seems the 'fantastic food' is for others - not for us. We do hope that these nice people get their act together for others than those who visit every evening. We wish them well, but we don't think we'll be dropping in any more. Really wish things were different. LOCAL.

This is a really nice old but refurbed pub just off the beach, the beer garden which is really just a paved raised area is a suntrap. The food is excellent and really good value for money
