“Spectacular set of locks!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2013

I had never heard of these locks and had no idea there were so many. I happened to be staying in Rowde and had a spare half hour so went off to explore. I arrived early in the morning when no-one else was around and they are quite a sight! I wish I had had more time to walk around there - will definitely return!

“Downhill walk from Devizes”

Interesting and a wonderful example of canal engineering. Plenty of narrow boats to be seen negotiating the locks. Taxi back to Devizes.

“best of breed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

Excellent spot for a walk in unique surroundings but probably needs a fine day to get the best from the extensive views.

I believe this stretch of canal is almost unique in this country for the number of locks next to each other. We walked the towpath from the Camping & Caravan Club Devizes site approx a couple of miles away enjoying the canal wild life, water fowl and herons plus a number of other birds. By the time we reached the foot of the flight of locks the weather was becoming ominously overcast. We walked slowly uphill, watching the barges and decided to stop for a coffee in the small canalside cafe (excellent drinks!). At which point the heavens opened and the downpour began. Unable to take the desired photos we decided we would have to brave the weather so returned to the caravan arriving looking like the proverbial drowned rats.

“Wish fulfillment”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2013

Found this place two decades ago and yearned to take a boat through but circumstances did not permit and when they did we thought it too tough for an ageing pair. This year the grown up children volunteered to come along. Aside from us we had four enthusiastic adults aboard and two more joined us for the day..........we were definitely over-crewed and we went up with an equally energetic Swedish family so there was little to do, but working the locks and chatting to everyone who was around on a lovely, sunny but very windy day kept us all happily occupied for about four hours. Toasted sandwiches at the café at the top (food is very good here) was our reward. We had planned to go on towards Newbury, but when the crew discovered there was little work to do for miles they rebelled. We went down on Tuesday with no other boats around, planning to head for Claverton Pumping Station only to find out that it was closed throughout 2013 so the crew elected to go back up on Wednesday and down again on Thursday. They really did relish the hard work, we all learned new skills and a lot of studying the old technology went on as well. There was a lot of wind all week which made handling the narrowboat more difficult than usual. We will never "do" the locks again but will be back for occasional days out I am sure. The only cost of visiting this attraction is parking the car. Great views in a rural location make Caen Hill a number one place with us.
