I checked in the lady was ok, we was told there was no chef for evening meal or breakfat.
You call this an hotel ????????
We then went into our room to be dissapointed with coffee in the nugs on the side, stained towells and dirty bedding.
Will not be returning

We booked through an agency and the owners phoned me to say they had our booking but did not use the agency as they were new owneers but honoured the £70 the agency charged. They charged £75per night per room. On arrival the welcome was less than friendly and we were given a key and told where the room was. We had booked a double but they only had a twin. We asked to book a table in the restaurant and the lady said she would have to ask the manager. We found Room 4. The carpet was dirty and a very large stain near the window. The shower room was very dirty and there was mould outside and inside the shower and the shower head dripped. The boxing at the back of the dirty toilet had nails sticking out of it. The towels were old and had loose threads and were very hard. There was a mirror over the basin. Soap was not provided. The headboards on the bed were loose and the pillows thin and lumpy. Thw white duvet covers had speckled mould where they had been put away damp. The blind on the window just about covered the glass and we looked out on to the main street. There were no bed side lights and one lamp in the room. There were 2 coat hangers on the rail as there was no wardrobe. There was no dressing table or mirror. On going to the bar early evening the owner said he could cook us a pork chop and sausage, but the chef had left. We went elsewhere to eat. At breakfast a full english was cooked well but there were no cereals, bread rolls or yogurt or anything available except the full english, toast, orange juice, coffee or tea. The owner had cooked the breakfast. They need to do a deep clean and replace the bedding and towels etc.

Room Tip: Dont take room 4

Thank you for your review. We do pride ourselves on being welcoming at the White Hart and generally receive positive feedback. I have bought your comments to the attention of our staff.
The kitchen was closed that evening as our chef was taken ill. The owner was at the hotel at the time and offered to cook you a wide variety of dishes, not just pork chops and sausages. He also directed you to two good restaurants close by which you chose to do.
We do have liquid soap dispensers in all our our bathrooms. We have replaced all the towels in the hotel.
We took over the hotel in May. There were no wardrobes but just the hanging rails you refer to. Given the historic nature of the building, it is difficult to find wardrobes which will stand level on the rather eccentric floors....hence the hanging rails!! However we are in the process of having custom built wardrobes fitted. We apologise for the absence of the mirror. This has been resolved.
We are delighted you enjoyed the English breakfast which is cooked freshly and to order.
We hopefully have now addressed all the points points that you have made and we thank you for taking the time to write your review.

After a "lastminute" booking due to a business appointment, I booked up a stay after reading favourable reviews. However, i was disappointed on arrival to told there would be no breakfast as the chef was off. I was offered a couple of free beers, but as I do not drink and generally a couple of beers is not the best way to start the day, this was a let down. I had booked in so i did not have to drive down to the meeting early morning without having a good breakfast.....As it was close to 22:00 i did not even get time to buy something from the local supermarket. I was not offered any discount to get something in the morning. The bar was empty, although it was a Monday night and the atmosphere was cold. The room was acceptable, but no shower gel / shampoo provided.

Room Tip: If you want a breakfast, confirm direct with hotel before you book, as you will not get a suitable...

This has been a useful review for us because it highlighted a problem with our processes. As you say, you booked at the last minute, on line. We only knew of your booking a few moments before you arrived. As the hotel was otherwise empty that night, we took the opportunity to carry out important maintenance work and hence the kitchen was closed. We are now aware that people can book online quite late in the day after we have arranged either maintenance work or staff leave etc and this situatrion could arise again. We have now taken steps of advising all the booking agencies that they should not accept bookings after 6.00pm on the same day. Any direct bookings received our staff would be aware of. We should have arranged for you to have breakfast in one of the neighbouring hotels with whom we work very closely. You do have our apologies and should you wish to stay with us again, please call the hotel directly and ask to speak with Steven or Teresa. Thank you for what was obvioulsy inttended to be a sensible and constructive review.

We went to the White Hart mainly because of location, close to Avebury Stone Circle, Bath, Marlborough and so on. It was just a place to stay but we were pleasantly surprised. The welcome from all the staff at first seems like well-trained corporate but we soon learned it was for real. The first room we were in was really nice with a lovely en-suite (12 if you’re going) Unfortunately we broke the handle on the toilet cistern and needed to move rooms! Instead of being moaned at we were simply offered a choice of the two remaining unoccupied rooms, both of which were equally nice ( 12a and 14).

Later we went to the bar and a couple came in who hadn’t booked (it was about 8.30 pm). They’d come from deep Cornwall and had a child with them. The Duty manager immediately offered to vacate his room and go to room twelve – he’d go down to the bar to use the loo if he needed. The manager’s room was cleaned and re-made within half-an hour – and the family were checked-in. Impressive stuff.

As a result, we decided to eat there and it was really good pub grub although one or two ‘posher’ dishes as well. At first, we were unhappy that there were no cereals at breakfast but the full English is cooked to order and was superb – amazing mushrooms. I don’t eat sausages and was pleased to see four rashers of bacon to compensate. When we thanked the waitress for the great service she said the chef wasn’t in and the guy doing the breakfast was the owner! Nice touch!
Overall, the service was excellent and if the place is tired here and there then the staff, the locals and the long-term residents (some there for months apparently) really make it a good place to be. We’ll go again for sure and thanks to everyone.

'I've lived locally for many years and seen this place ebb and flow but it seems the new owners have got a grip. The welcome at the (now much cleaner) bar couldn't be better and the ales are very well kept. The function room is a hidden gem - a fully equipped 'nightclub' with lights music strobes the lot will hold 80 people. You'd never expect to find it tucked away upstairs. The courtyard would benefit from a makeover and the bar staff tell me this in 'on the agenda'. The food is excellent - I had the best mushroom soup I heve ever had and the steak was cooked to perfection. Prices are reasonable. It's not close enough to be my local but we are planning to go back to eat - the menu changes every day and there are lots of specials. Worth a look 4 stars'.
