“Excellent service”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

We went to the White Hart mainly because of location, close to Avebury Stone Circle, Bath, Marlborough and so on. It was just a place to stay but we were pleasantly surprised. The welcome from all the staff at first seems like well-trained corporate but we soon learned it was for real. The first room we were in was really nice with a lovely en-suite (12 if you’re going) Unfortunately we broke the handle on the toilet cistern and needed to move rooms! Instead of being moaned at we were simply offered a choice of the two remaining unoccupied rooms, both of which were equally nice ( 12a and 14).

Later we went to the bar and a couple came in who hadn’t booked (it was about 8.30 pm). They’d come from deep Cornwall and had a child with them. The Duty manager immediately offered to vacate his room and go to room twelve – he’d go down to the bar to use the loo if he needed. The manager’s room was cleaned and re-made within half-an hour – and the family were checked-in. Impressive stuff.

As a result, we decided to eat there and it was really good pub grub although one or two ‘posher’ dishes as well. At first, we were unhappy that there were no cereals at breakfast but the full English is cooked to order and was superb – amazing mushrooms. I don’t eat sausages and was pleased to see four rashers of bacon to compensate. When we thanked the waitress for the great service she said the chef wasn’t in and the guy doing the breakfast was the owner! Nice touch!
Overall, the service was excellent and if the place is tired here and there then the staff, the locals and the long-term residents (some there for months apparently) really make it a good place to be. We’ll go again for sure and thanks to everyone.

'I've lived locally for many years and seen this place ebb and flow but it seems the new owners have got a grip. The welcome at the (now much cleaner) bar couldn't be better and the ales are very well kept. The function room is a hidden gem - a fully equipped 'nightclub' with lights music strobes the lot will hold 80 people. You'd never expect to find it tucked away upstairs. The courtyard would benefit from a makeover and the bar staff tell me this in 'on the agenda'. The food is excellent - I had the best mushroom soup I heve ever had and the steak was cooked to perfection. Prices are reasonable. It's not close enough to be my local but we are planning to go back to eat - the menu changes every day and there are lots of specials. Worth a look 4 stars'.

Our weekend away was saved by the generosity of the new owners who honoured vouchers purchased before they took over. We were initially put off by the bar (which we discovered is due to be reorganised) but they sell Bath Ales! Our room was clean and comfortable (with a lovely view of the green). It was an excellent central point from which to explore the surrounding area including Bowood, Avebury and Laycock Abbey. We also discovered some interesting walks in Calne itself and the cycle path and nature reserve on the dismantled railway just minutes from the hotel. Breakfast at the hotel was generous and the new staff friendly and helpful. We look forward to returning and wish the hotel every success.

We stayed over the jubilee bank holiday weekend because we had a voucher we had purchased online.
I think we got a total bargin at £59 for two nights including breakfast.
The staff and owners were very, very helpful. We stayed in room 12b and the room was lovely, clean, bright and spacious. I had read the reviews on trip advisor so was very nervous about our stay but it turned out to be brilliant.
We ate in the resturant, it was a very limited menu and was written on paper but apparently the owners have recently taken over and the menu is not set yet as such. I didnt fancy anything that was on offer so I asked if I could have something else and it was made for me. My boyfriend loved the meal he had.
The breakfasts were nice and plentyful and I really have no complaints at all.
The only things I would say was that the room could have had a proper wardrobe and a few more hangers.
I think this place deserves a chance and I wouldnt be put off by previous negative reviews as it now has new owners who I beieve are keen to get the place back on its feet. We didnt do much in Calne but the hotel was a good location for getting to Bath for the day and also for other local historical sites.

I think it's a bit unfair that the previous negative reviews are still on here as there has been a change of ownership recently.

My partner and myself thought that this place was very good and the owner (Stephen) and the staff (Teresa and Rocky) were brilliant in every way from making my girlfriend and myself very welcome.

A slight problem with the booking on arrival as the previous owners did not keep a record of bookings made after they decided to leave but this was not a problem for the lady booking us in, Teresa was very helpful and polite, explained the situation to us then continued to book us both in at very short notice and under difficult circumstances which was not their fault, (if you are reading this Teresa, we are really grateful for your help).

Let's get one thing straight, this not The Dorchester or The Savoy in London, so let's keep expectations sensible! It is a pub and hotel in a small town. The staff were fantastic and really helpful as mentioned. We ate in the restaurant the first night with a view to possibly eating in the hotel the second night if the food was good, it was lovely food and at a reasonable price, so with that in mind WE DID eat in the hotel restaurant the second night as well.

The room was adequate for our needs as a couple and the cleanliness was of a very acceptable standard. After our first night there we asked Teresa what was the checking out time the next day and we were told "ten o'clock, is that okay with you both?", that maybe a funny thing to add here but it was the politeness of being asked if that was okay with us both that was a lovely thing to say.

If we are ever in Calne again, we will be more than happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 15 has a corner shower which would be a little small and tight for anyone with a large build.

This is a lovely building and the new team are very welcoming. They took over in early May and according to locals at the bar, have transformed the place. It is never going to be the Park Lane Hilton but for a great value weekend break in a good location with new owners who really work and offer good well presented food, it's worth a try. Nearly always full tho (I couldn't get the dates I want in the Summer) so some of the really bad reviews must be out of date? All in all, it's OK. 4 stars.

Room Tip: My standard room was more than adequate but I hear the bridal suite is phenomenal!

Calne is an ex farming town, previously offering employment in food processing plants. It is now a sad, dilapidated town with three run down pubs and a so called
3 star hotel.

We paid £59 for a two night stay via KGB . It was £59 too much. The lady who greeted us was pleasant enough, but on arrival I immediately regretted not checking the place out first. We was escorted across a weed strewn courtyard
to our room. Dark, dirty, unkept are a few
adjectives that would describe it- although the shower was warm.

It was jubilee weekend so we were determined to show some bulldog spirit- it was not enough! We walked into Calne for a meal-it was shut. Reluctantly, we decided to eat at the inn- oh dear. No menu was available, just a verbal description of what was on offer. We both
chose fish and chips, oh dear. Oven chips, frozen fish cooked by the 'chef'. The wine menu was on an A4 sheet of paper, our chosen selection of wine had not been chilled.

The dining room was filthy with dead flies on the window sill. At this point we decided to cut our losses and leave next morning- to her credit the lady who served us did not charge us for the wine.

A very unfortunate and very sad experience. The White Hart' should call it
a day.
