It is not often that I feel the need to write a review before I have stayed at the hotel however my recent experience warrants a comment.

I was part of a group booking of 10 rooms with a wedding party due to stay next week. The bride and groom had kindly organised the group booking for us months in advance at a discounted rate and we were all looking forward to the stay. We had stumbled upon Beechfield House during a weekend in Wiltshire and could not believe our luck that there were rooms available for the dates we needed.

On Friday (one week before the wedding) the owner of this hotel contacted the groom to cancel the booking with the opportunistic excuse that he now has a better offer.

We are now frantically searching for accommodation in the area a week before the wedding for the 10 rooms that we no longer have.

I really hope that the financial gain that this hotel is getting from the new booking far out ways any future business that would have passed through his doors as a recommendation from any of the wedding party.

BeechfieldHouse, General Manager at Beechfield House, responded to this reviewResponded July 27, 2007

In order to correct the wholly erroneous content of this review I have copied the email sent to the potential host on July 20th 2007. This clearly shows the reasons that no bookings were held - no deposits or confirmations were received from any of the potential guests! The owner did not contact the groom to cancel a booking as no booking had been made but responded to an email having previously heard nothing for a couple of weeks.

thank you for your email.
I’m sorry that we are unable to assist with your booking, however to clarify the position you were asking me for the following:

To subsidise your overseas friends for the apparent weakness of a foreign currency
To keep all available rooms closed off all our booking websites until a few days before to wait for your overseas friends to arrive in this country
To turn away valid bookings for guests willing and able to commit to us with a fully paid deposit including other overseas parties able to telephone with their card details and secure their reservation
To ignore the advice I gave you in my email of the June 20th that a deposit is required to book the rooms

You may not be aware from our perspective of the number of no shows and late cancellations that occur in this business – impacting greatly on profitability. Since we introduced our policy of only confirming firm bookings secured by a non refundable deposit we have been able to greatly reduce this.

The reluctance of your guests to contact us direct, as almost all others do with similar group bookings, meant that your availability reduced as each day went by and even at the time of your last email not one of your guests had contacted us to confirm with their deposit. I’m only surprised that you are surprised by the economics of our situation.

Incidentally all of the bookings that were taken for your dates were for single occupancy so even at full rate the revenue will be less than had your bookings been confirmed – the point I was making was that I hadn’t been asked to reduce them – not that we had taken a higher bid.

Kind regards,

We chose Beechfield House to celebrate my wife Joy's birthday and it turned out to be a really happy and memorable occasion.

James and his team looked after all sixteen of us so really well in an efficient, friendly yet unobstrusive manner and the whole event went like clockwork from afternoon tea when we all arrived on Saturday through pre-dinner drinks with delicious canapes followed by an excellent dinner to breakfast together on Sunday morning while the bedrooms were comfortable ,spacious and well equipped in keeping with the rest of the hotel.

Our guests were unanimous in their praise of the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere of Beechfield House and its beautiful setting which helped in no small way to make the whole experience so unforgettable and enjoyable!

We stayed at Beechfield House for a wedding held at the property.
Its a beautiful place, with lovely gardens to sit out in.

The staff couldn't have been more helpful, and in the main service was great. Only criticism is that they seemed a bit short staffed for a fully booked weekend, so dinner service was a little slow, and breakfast order did not appear until reminded.

Would certainly return here for a weekend break sometime.
