“Loud yob central!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2008

Hotel service was provided by teenagers with a couple of 20 somethings in charge over night .

Food baked to a cinder and cold at the same time!

Area: opposite the main night spot, dont expect any sleep if you stay Friday - Sunday. The windows are basic, affording you zero level of sound protection.

To put my review into perspective Ive stayed in many hotels 3* - 5* across the UK, America, and India!! If I had slept amongst the large unruly crowd in the streets Id have stood as much a chance of sleeping.

Would strongly suggest you avoid this hotel!

I realise you cant expect to sleep as well as you do at home, but this was awful! From food, to area to service, you dont normally expect to find teenagers running about behind the scenes in and out of the kitchen etc!

  • Liked — Leaving Amesbury the next morning
  • Disliked — The lack of noise protection from the large crowd of locals who congregate outside!

well peeps it thought it was pretty good i have to say (keep reading for a detailed review).

It was my girlfriends birthday and she had mention a few months ago that she would like to go Stone Henge sometime, so taking this on board i thought this would be an excellent opportunity to score a few brownie points and decided to book us a weekend away.

After reading all the reviews i was pretty skeptical at first i have to admit, but due to my late planning i was pretty limited to what was available in terms of practicality for visiting Stone Henge.
when we arrived the hotel WAS clear and had great character with lots of history associated with it e.g.. Coaching Inn reputed to be the one referred to in one of Charles Dickens' novels & hq of Colonel Fairfax during civil war.

Anyway apart from the cultural side of things there has a quiet pub and a function room which on the weekend is where the locals come to have a good time (are rather friendly too) This was good for us as we wanted to celebrate and have some fun.

Overall i thought this a very good place stay whilst visiting Stone Henge as it caters for all old and young and we had a brilliant time. So if your young and you want to have fun (as we did) this is perfect.

I hope this review helps you to make up your mind as all the others left me a little indecisive.

Dean

We chose this place blindly after visiting Stonehenge and travelling on to Portsmouth. We were pleasantly surprised by Amesbury and the hotel.
The George is old and crooked yet charming and interesting. The original beams were open in our room and that was neat to see. The bathroom needed better cleaning but the room we had was really neat. We had a bay window overlooking the street and a four poster bed.
We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was great, traditional English fare. We enjoyed our stay.

Stayed at this Hotel for one night to attend a wedding.
I found the reception extremely disorganised and untidy.

We stayed in a double room which had wallpaper peeling off the wall. The floor needed a good vacuuming especially near to the bed, there was a layer of dust in the top of the headboard.

The bathroom was appalling dirt on the window sill, we had a chipped bath and a stained sink. there was a rather large opening on the floor where a pipe came in this let in draft.

The function room had black cobwebbs hanging from the ceiling.

We had breakfast in the dining room the next morning. The full english breakfasts were ready prepaired on a plate and being kept hot on the hotplate. The Dining room was very taty and in bad need of a good clean.

Thank goodness we only had to stay for one night.

A pleasant enough stopping place, but don't expect too much. Stayed in a twin room, but it was all a bit "tired and tatty" at the edges.
Large car park at the rear and the pub (open to the public) is all part of the same complex. Food in the pub is reasonable (for the price) and a good selection of local beers are available. Staff were generally ultra-helpful but some service behind the bar was a tad abrupt and not at all welcoming.
