Lovely location (Just off the A1, not far from the M62 junction but in the lovely Brockadale Valley) especially in Summer with large car park and loads of character.
Attentive staff- professional welcome (wise to book at weekends especially) and we were shown to the 'side room'. OK, although more of an atmosphere and 'buzz' in the main room - window seats are good,. Still, not too much noise so easier for hard-of-hearing mum, wife and me to chat. Super, wide menu choice with a select number of specials on the board. Decided to miss the starters and stick with mains with an option of deserts afterwards perhaps.
Beef Wellington (cooked exactly as requested -Medium/well) was tasty and large! Mushroom duxelle not Pate but that's my preference anyway. Tasty, well-cooked puff pastry and rich wine sauce. My wife had ordered Fish and Chips. In the past this has been my choice at The Bluebell because the dish has consistently been superb. On this occasion, however, the haddock was rather too moist in the middle but within an excellent batter. My mum had a Chicken Sizzler.. well presented, tasty but much too large for her modest appetite. Add to all that, the well-cooked but usual selection of veg and we ended up with lots of food!
Of course, the portion sizes aren't mentioned as a criticism at all! The first question to be answered is whether the food has been well cooked and presented and undoubtedly - apart from the over-moist haddock - it was. It's worth a mention, though cos if you have a modest appetite you may want to select a starter instead - or at least be pre-warned!. However, if you have a hearty appetite and value quality cooking, then you certainly won't be disappointed (and on previous occasions the Fish and chips have been a good choice.)
A well-stocked bar but normally only one person serving so be careful not to be caught there just as your meal is arriving!
Needless to say, we didn't have room for deserts though the choice looked great!
