“Delicious, well priced food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012

We had a fantastic meal on Saturday 17th November. We ate from the Menu de Jour and had three courses for £25 each which was washed downed with a bottle of Guy de Chassey. The food was genuinely delicious and unlike some of the other reviewers, I thought that it was well priced for a Michelin star restaurant. I also found the waiters to be very friendly and they were always on hand to refill the champagne flutes and water glasses. The atmosphere was relaxed and the restaurants old world charm made it feel like we were eating in grannies lovely old cottage (complete with inglenook). My only gripe is their website. I tried to use it several times last week but the URL’s (links) didn't work properly. Even when they eventually sprang back into life, the website looked as if it had been developed by someone in their bedroom. Many of the ‘clickable’ options are very hard to read as they are in a small font with vertical text that has letters displayed at 90 degrees to the perpendicular. Come on Box Tree, shape up with your IT, not everyone will persevere as I did.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012

My husband and I dined here to celebrate our six-month wedding anniversary and had a wonderful evening. The reception was warm, and the front-of-house staff were very pleasant, welcoming and efficient. We treated ourselves to glasses of champagne while perusing the menu in the lounge, the atmosphere of which was relaxed and convivial.

We opted for the 6-course Gourmand menu (£65 pp) and sommelier's wine choice (£27.50), which proved to be an excellent decision. The food was incredible, as one would expect, and we enjoyed every course, each as excellent as the previous. My only disappointment was not being able to quite finish the souffle at the end of the meal!

The wine pairings were amazing and really added another dimension to the experience.

The service was fantastic - not at all pretentious, but very professional; the waiters were friendly and knowledgeable, and clearly went out of their way to make our experience an enjoyable one. The tone with which they addressed us and interacted with us was spot on; when my (weak-bladdered) husband went to the toilet, the waiter chatted to me, asking my opinions on the food and generally making conversation until my husband returned.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was convivial, with other diners clearly having a good time - sometimes these kinds of restaurants can feel too formal, but this was very relaxed.

All-in-all, this was an incredible experience. It is very expensive (the total bill being over £200) but that doesn't matter too much as it really is a special occasion place, and we'll now look forward to finding an occasion befitting of another visit!

“Overpriced but enjoyable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2012

Had a lovely tasting menu which was all well seasoned and cooked beautifully, but I have to agree with some of the comments on here re pompous and overpriced....it's a shame because the effort they have gone to is possibly slightly misjudged, to the point you feel it's almost difficult to relax.

“Always superb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2012

Having been a fairly frequent visitor to the Box Tree over the last 25 years I thought it was about time I wrote a review!
The restaurant is an old favourite and tends to be our choice for a celebration as it is so special. The food is always wonderful and the service is perfect. Yes it's on the expensive side but definitely worth it, especially for a special occasion.

“Touch of class”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

Having visited most of the highly rated restaurants across the country the Boxtree certainly didn't disappoint. A warm welcome followed by an impressive menu and wine list offering a wide array of choice gave an impressive start to a lovely evening. The overall decor is fitting for a reputed establishment and the dining experience is as you would expect in a Michelin starred kitchen. The only negative I could possibly state is the close proximity of our fellow diners, particularly as we could hear the gentleman whining about the cost in relation to the adjacent Wetherspoons public house! I would certainly recommend anyone to dine here regardless of the occasion and special compliments must go to the staff for their friendly and knowledgable attitude throughout the evening.
