“'Good for you' new General Manager!”
Reviewed March 11, 2012

First impressions were that it is a fabulous hotel in the process of refurbishment. Magnificent public areas with grand windows, high ceilings and lovely decor. Upon arrival we were made most welcome by the very friendly and helpful receptionist. We carried our own bags to our room which was quite a trek up some steep stairs. It would have been appreciated if an offer to carry our bags was made. Our room was beautifully decorated and furnished, not much of a view though. The bathroom was thoroughly modern with an excellent bath and powerful, easy to use shower. No seal on the shower screen meant that the bathroom floor was swimming afterwards! They should install an extractor fan ASAP as the beautiful cornices are already turning mouldy. Breakfast the first day was fine, the second it was rather chaotic with no replenishing of empty food trays, milk jugs, crockery and bread for toasting until everyone had gone! However, if you had time to wait it was delicious. I was impressed by the presence of the new General Manger who clearly was on a fact finding mission and also aimed, quite effectively, to smooth the ruffled feathers of those disgruntled guests who had to wait too long. Overall a very comfortable stay in beautiful surroundings enhanced by wonderful friendly staff who did all they could to help ensure a pleasant break.

Room Tip: We were given a free upgrade without asking so perhaps you could ask for one

Thank you for your feedback and positive comments regarding your recent stay. I am delighted that you were impressed by our beautiful Victorian property.

A large amount of time and resources have been put into the development of staff and operational function to improve our guests experience but clearly there are some areas we have to work harder to meet and then exceed our guests expectations.

We are currently in the central point of our on-going refurbishment program striving to bring the property in a much improved standard.

We look forward to welcoming you back to The Craiglands Hotel in the near future.

Kind regards,

Volkan Acil

We must be the only people with a voice,of the 43 that were present at 9a.m. on Feb 14th.On presenting ourselves to staff in the dining room,we asked for a table for two,and were told that we should take the second table in,as indicated by the young waiter with a waive of the arm.I immediately questioned which table he meant, because the one I thought was the table in question had not been cleared. When asked, the waiter said that he was sorry, but they were short staffed, and that he would clear the table "as soon as we can".I siezed the opportunity to order coffee for two and mixed toast in expectation of a clean sweep and the prospect of helping ourselves to the buffet breakfast. We sat down and waited for approx 10 minutes, and having interesting conversations with our near neighbours, two of whom had already been waiting for a table clearance for at least 10 minutes. We did get the coffee and the toast, but there was no room on the table for the items although we had stacked as much as we could into one corner. My wife offered to take the waiter's tray and clear the table herself. The waiter did clear the table, but left the used butter and condiments plate in the middle of the table. The fruit and yoghurt were a doddle, just go up and help yourself. The coffee proved more difficult, but the Dunkirk Spirit in the Dining Room prevailed, with people sitting at tables with spare cups and saucers invited me to help myself.Everyone, apart from the couple next to us who were less assertive than most of the other fellow guests, took the same approach and the atmosphere was brilliant.Suffice it to say that we were O.K.,the others were O.K.,the couple next to us finally got their tea and toast after 35 minutes of waiting.I think that either people received a refund of sorts,or are generally not the type to complain, which would explain the lack of similar reviews on this site, but surely, out of the other 41 people in the room at that time someone must feel as annoyed by the management as I do?
This review has been posted now because I was awaiting a response from The Craiglands over a separate matter regarding a room which was more like a refridgerator. That issue was settled .

Beautiful old building with an unfortunate extension and tired rooms that were nothing like the photographs on the website. The room was in great need of modernisation but had a beautiful view. The room was rather cold, the bedding was substandard and the water pressure in the shower was non-existent. Breakfast was OK and the dining hall is in keeping with the building. Staff were variable in hospitality ranging from very friendly to rather indifferent. All in all I do not think it was worth the price paid but has the potential for improvement.

Room Tip: Perhaps specify in advance for one of the newly refurbished rooms and a room with a view.

We were a party of 4 on a 2nts 40 winks break. Our rooms were clean well appointed and comfortable. The staff were efficient, helpful and cheerful nothing was too much trouble.

Location is great the hotel is near enough to walk into Ilkley which has lots to offer. The energetic in our party could walk up to the cow and calf rocks and accross the moors.

After having read the previous reviews I was a little apprehensive about staying at the Craiglands hotel. I had bought a special deal for a two night stay on KGB deals, and knowing how hotels and restaurants can sometimes offer less than impressive service for customers who have bought these deals, I was thoroughly preparing myself for the short end of the stick.

But when we arrived we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff, who remained that way throughout the trip, and directed to our room which was very nice, clean, and modern. It had a big comfy bed, and tea and coffee facilities with yummy biscuits which were replenished each day.

My only complaint is that proper attention was not paid to the cleanliness of the bathroom, there were quite a few hairs on the floor and I think a towel had been left behind from the previous stay. But did this ruin our trip? Absolutely not.

Location is great, a short walk from the centre of town. Although I must warn it is quite a hefty hike up hill on the way back up, so if you're looking to work off a big dinner like we did it's a great way to help burn the calories. But if you're feeling lazy, like we did on the second night, we got a taxi which cost a mere 3 quid.

Ilkley Moor is literally just behind the hotel, and great for a walk following on of the hotels yummy big breakfasts. On the first day (a Thursday) we were offered a menu which would choose from a range of delicious breakfasts, and on the Friday it was a buffet selection of the usual sausages, bacon, tomato, scrambled eggs, hash browns. Either breakfasts were just as nice as each other.

Yorkshire Dales National Park is 20 mins drive away.

Let's face it, unless youre going on holiday to spend all your time in the room, this place clean, modern, and fairly elegant, and is perfect for a good nights sleep following a big day of exploring the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

We held our wedding at the Craiglands and were very impressed with their planning and organisation. There were also special touches on the day which were a nice suprise. They catered for all special dietary requirements that we specified and the guests commented on how good the food was. The staff were friendly and helpful and always ready to deal with any questions or requests. I would definitely recommend for special occasions.

The staff were mainly helpful and friendly but some may need more training. The bedroom was very sad and was like something out of the 1950s. However, it was quiet and quite comfortable and slept well. Bathroom was clean, modern with good hot water but all needs further maintenance.

The maintenance on the building is on the whole appalling, as it is old and should be demolished and a decent apartment block or smaller modern hotel developed. The sash window was broken and on opening, it fell like a guillotine on my hand, nearly breaking the bone. Beware!

The dining area was in comparison spectacular although breakfast buffet was not!

The hotel at £94 B&B is overpriced. However, it is a short scramble up to the Moor and owls hoot at night. There is a 10 minute walk down to town and quite uphill on way back.
