“Very good, breakfast not so much...”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

Myself and my partner have visited the Cow and Calf on numerous occasions either just for a drive out or as a reward after a walk on the moors over the road.

We decided to take advantage of one of the early booking offers and stay overnight for my birthday, we had also obtained a 20% discount voucher for the restaurant from a previous visit so, all in all, we got excellent value.

The food was, as always, excellent, it has no airs and graces but is just very good quality, way above average, very imaginitive pub food served and presented in a very professional manner.

Our room was small but spotlessly clean and served the purpose of a one night stay very well with all the usual amenities that you would expect within a hotel room. Although given the size of the room, with only roof mounted Velux windows offering no view of anything but upwards, I would imagine you could get a bit stir crazy on a longer stay but that just applies to the room we had, there may be other superior, better appointed, rooms available.

The one slight grumble was the breakfast, it was advertised as a "complimentary continental breakfast" and it is just that - literally. Coffee, fruit juice, cereal, yoghurt, croissants and bread to make your own toast, all self service, that's it, no hot alternative on offer at all. The whole thing was just a tad disappointing, everything had been left out and turned over by previous guests and just looked a little bit "left over."

But, all in all, we went for the evening meal and the night away from home so it ticked all the boxes on that score, I just feel with a little more effort on the breakfasts it could be classed as a true hotel stay of outstanding value rather than the token gesture it came across as but, in fairness, it wouldn't stop me from doing it again.

Room Tip: If you specifically ask for a room with a view you probably can't go wrong but the room we had w...

On a day out in Ilkley this week enjoying good weather, we decided to have lunch here before doing a 5 mile walk on the beautiful Moor adjacent to the hotel. The setting is stunning and there are plenty of tables outside where diners can enjoy the views. The menu looked good and we both ordered steak sandwiches. I suppose we should have realised when they didn't ask us how we liked our steak that they weren't going to be the world's best, but you live and learn! They were OK but nothing to write home about. The beer was good though. Service a bit slapdash - the waiter asked if we would like any sauces with the food and we asked for mayonnaise, but he came back with tomato ketchup! We probably would come back, because of the setting, but we'd choose our food carefully...

Part of the Vintage Inn group this does not let the side down. Spacious dining areas divided into sections which feel intimate. Good food and cheerful service. Reasonably priced menu and a welcome for all.
Have stayed here on previous occasions so can vouch for the rooms also

Beautiful looking pub in a great location which is completely let down by a manager who has a chip on his sholder and is dismissive of any of his customers opinions and problems. How he got the job is anyone's guess. I'm not surprised to see that several other people on trip advisor have complained about him. I shall not be returning to the pub ever again, which I think was the managers intention in the first place. He treats customers like they are problems.

We stayed here in 2008,; would love to come back. Everything was perfect, from the room, to the food, to the sound of sheep baaing in the early morning hours. The town of Ilkley itself is a gem, not far from Haworth and York, two of our destinations. We enjoyed ambling around Ilkley. And later, we could sit outside and eat a lovely curry dinner while gazing at the countryside, in particular, the Cow and the Calf rocks nearby.

If you prefer to stay at a real inn, rather than a cookie-cutter hotel, then this place is for you!

Room Tip: There is no elevator, so you will have to walk a few steps. It is worth it!

Visited for lunch Fri 12/04/2013 after brisk walk on the moor. Bar poorly manned, staff often on phone answering outside enquiries. Had to ask about food order after waiting 30mins, even though the restaurant was not busy. My partner & I had the beer-battered cod & chips - not bad fish though small inside the batter, sitting on a small bed of insipid chips direct from a bag in the freezer, accompanied by only a tablespoonful of mushy peas and a tiny paper pot of tartare sauce - and all this for 10.50 each! Shame really as the setting and premises are very good. we were thinking of visiting for a weekend break, but I don't think so now.

I have been to this restaurant 2-3 times over the last year and found the food to be excellent and the service is also very good. We have had to wait on occasion as the area is very popular with walkers but not more than maybe 20 minutes which is enough time to grab a drink from the bar.
Would recommend this place to everyone.
