I have no idea why the previous reviews have been so negative! We stayed in the Indulgence Room which was gorgeous and everything I had hoped for to surprise my partner. The owner knew it was out anniversary and arranged rose petals to be placed on our bed when we arrived which was a lovely touch. Even though it wasn't very busy as we stayed on a Monday night, the owners made sure we had fun by introducing us to "the nail game"! The room was imaculate and the breakfast was beautiful. Will most deffinately be going back!! The bad reviews are clearly from people who do not know how to have a good time....

What has happened? We have stayed here three times before, a couple of years ago and had the most amazing time. Immaculate rooms, gorgeous food and the most attentive staff who literally went out of their way to ensure we had the best stay. We would have had no hesitancy in recommending the place to anyone.
However, we went for food a couple of weeks ago and the service was horrendous. The woman behind the bar was miserable and more interested in her friends, than us, returning customers. As a result and due to the reviews on Trip Advisor, we cancelled our planned stay later this month.
The place we saw is not reflective of the experience we had previously encountered. We did not recognise any of the staff, so can only presume the place has changed hands to have gone downhill so rapidly.
I don't know what has happened

If you have previously only stayed in a B&B used by the DHSS then this is probably your idea of Boutique Hotel. Scary women door people, who refused to let in one of our party to check into his room as he was male. The hotel manager last managed to be polite to someone in the early 80's when she passed her being ignorant and rude to hotel guests exam. Everything too much trouble, no one explained the womens disco when the booking was made. The noise of the disco kept the hotel shaking till the early hours, no room service was ever delivered despite trying to telephone for some many times, they can probably not hear on the other end other baked bean tin as the string had been disconnected. We could not go to the bar because one of our party was male, sneering bar staff, cheap lager, screaming lesbians. The signs in the corridors were cheap print offs from a computer blue tacked up, how sophisticated!

Take heed... unless you are a lesbian of dubious taste do not go here!

I wish wish wish that I'd read these reviews before staying at Bar Place as so many of the complaints mentioned were echoed in my stay.

There was not a whiff of the boutique about it which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't shout about it on their website. To put it bluntly, this is a pub with rooms. There was no reception area, no warm welcome. You just walk into the bar like any other customer so it's all a bit disorientating. The young bar staff were 'fine' but entirely disinterested in making us feel specially welcome.

The rooms are well decorated but that's about it - there were no nice touches or well thought through elements. As mentioned in other reviews, their website mentions a Senseo coffee machine in the rooms but there was just the usual Nescafe sachets. When I mentioned this to the chambermaid she didn't know what I was talking about. But she went and asked and did drum up a coffee machine - but then there was nowhere for it to go, so it just had to balance precariously on a shelf.

The noise from the disco on the first night was ridiculous - we'd come away for a romantic break but we couldn't whisper sweet nothings to each other over the noise! When I went to complain I had a ridiculous shouting match with the manager because she couldn't actually hear what I was saying over the blaring music.

Trying to get breakfast was a joke. It took forty five minutes on the first morning. When we queried how long it might take they told us that 'it was all made fresh'. Quite how that justified a forty five minute delay I don't know! On the second morning, we placed our order but the 'chef' (who was having a fag in the bar) told us that she wasn't going to do anything until she'd finished her cup of tea. Then she went back to her fag.....

Overall, the atmosphere in the bar was unwelcoming and off-putting and we felt we had to scuttle through to get to our room. The room was adequate but the noise was terrible, the staff terrible, the service terrible. If you're prepared to pay top notch for average pub accommodation in a good location then this will do. But if you want boutique, really, don't bother.

We stayed on the weekend of the womens disco and thoroughly enjoyed the disco, good crowd, good music and reasonably priced drinks with pleasant bar staff. The vibe was chilled, various ages and types of women there, everyone semed to have a great time. We did.

The hotel itself had highs and lows, overall we thought it was overpriced and not really what we have come to expect from a boutique hotel.

The highs were a really comfortable bed, lovely bedlinen and a fab shower which seemed to have limitless hot water. The colours in the room, and the art throughout the hotel were nice. The room was also very clean.

The lows were that the room was initially very cold with no heating put on to air the room for our arrival, the finish of the decor was poor, poor quality drinks tray rather than the advertised senseo drinks machine, no information on how to contact the owner should there be an emergency etc. We got very little sleep, this was in no way connected to the disco but from external noise. We were woken between 4 and 5 by road sweepers who seemed intent on sweeping the street to within an inch of its life, then by an alarm which we thought could be the fire alarm but ended up being a mis set alarm, then at 7 by a man loading a van outside and then at 7.30 by men digging up and mending the road outside the room, all on a Sunday morning. Yes the noise was not the fault of the hotel, but none of the windows had double or secondary glazing and every noise outside could be heard. Not relaxing or conducive to sleep.

The breakfast took half an hour to come, despite us being asked what time we wanted it (served in bar). The full english was cold apart from a rather nice cumberland sausage, and basic, with no hash brown, beans, black pudding etc. The toast was so cold that the butter did not melt. We were so tired we could not face complaining. We won't return.

Myself and my partner first discovered this little gem 2 years ago and as a consequence are regular visitors. It is the most welcoming and friendly hotel we have ever had the pleasure to stay in. The staff are very friendly nothing is too much trouble, the themed rooms are tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean and the food second to none. The bar has a wonderful atmoshpere with a wide selection of reasonably priced drinks. In all we cannot fault this hotel and the former comments are way off the mark, but then there is just no pleasing some people!!!
