The White Lion Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Hebden Bridge
Reviewed December 30, 2011

We ate at the White Lion over the Christmas period. Under new ownership and with a huge refurbishment underway it is massively improved. Good food, pleasant staff, good service and lovely surroundings. Hebden Bridge has been short of a quality pub/hotel for a long time. The plans for the guest rooms look good too. I would reccomend it and their website is very informative and accurate.

Dear Mary

Many thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to post a review. We have been over-whelmed and so grateful for all the positive comments we have been receiving since we opened in December, and we take great satisfaction in knowing that we are generating these comments and hopefully providing Hebden Bridge with a category of pub it has long been in need of. Thanks again, and hope to see you all soon. Michael.

we visited the white lion after hearing about the refurbishment they have just undergone. the pub decor was perfect and has a very friendly atmosphere and the food was of a good standard. On our arrival we asked the young man at the door for a table for 4 and he said they were very busy and we should try again in an hour or maybe tomorrow! we said we wanted to wait untill a table came free and after having a look around the pub we found a table for 6 empty, the young man said we could have it and he didnt realise it was free. Our order was taken promptly and the food came in good time although they made a mistake with a starter which we didnt mention as we didnt want to delay things. some people near us had to ask for a menu and then ask for their order to be taken, our kids deserts came without cuttlery and we had to ask for it, when the spoons came they wer big desert spoons and the kids are only 2 and need small spoons. When we were paying a man came to the bar to ask for a menu and the young man taking my payment said to him "er you'll have to wait untill i finish this to which the man asked another member of staff behind the bar who got the menu straight away. These are all details but after spending so much money on the pub it would make sense to have the staff trained to the same high standards. We will give the pub another try in a couple of months when things have settled down a bit but if we get the same service we probably wont go again.

Dear Madam

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. I am sorry your visit was not as good as what we would have hoped. I do admit that after opening at the start of December it took all of use at the White Lion by surprise just how busy we became; and just how fast we became so busy! Having over 20 years hospitality experience, I thought I had the necessary staff levels in place prior to opening. But I think no one could have predicted just how busy we were from day one. We were 5x the optimistic forecast that I set prior to opening! As such, I had to double the staffing levels, but there is always delays with recruiting the right people. We were also always just so busy establishing the business, setting procedures, bedding in the refurbishment, and all the other things that you need to do when setting up a new business. And all this in addition to a booming Christmas trade! So yes, I am very sorry that the staff were not trained to the appropriate levels at the time of your visit. But things have certainly settled down now and I could not fault the staff that we have in place. I really hope that you will visit again soon to see how we have improved. Kind regards and best wishes. Michael.

As locals we were very disappointed to find on our fourth visit to the pub the choice of beer was very limited. Each time we have been in the maximum choice has been 3 beers out of 5 but yesterday there was only slightly foxed on and it wasn't very nice. The beer had a chemical after taste. With 5 pumps available there should be a better selection of beers. In Hebden Bridge there is a wide diverse community of real ale drinkers and if you get your beers right people will flock to your pub. The staff explained to us that they had been taken by surprise at the popularity since opening and had run out of beer. I appreciate you had just opened and need time to get the orders right but my daughter visited the pub on the 27th and there was no tonic! On a more positive note the pub is lovely the meal we had was excellent and the choice on the menu was extensive. We had quite a long wait for the food but when it arrived it was very good, nice and hot and lovely home made chips. I would recommend the white lion to friends and family and wish the new owners well. If you can sort your beer suppliers out and as a suggestion when ordering beers have a better variety of types ie a good bitter a stout a lighter beer a good christmas ale etc. I feel the white lion and its new owners will be there for a long time and wish you well. I hope you find my comments useful and i wish you every success.

Dear Barbara

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review, and also for the kind words of encouragement. We very much value all comments made, whether good or bad, and will endeavor to act in accordance. Yes, it was my fault that we did not have enough beer! I am sincerely sorry that this caused disappointment for your visit. We were completely taken by surprise at just how busy we were from day one, after opening at the start of December. In my experience, that level of custom for a new business could just not have been predicted. It was absolutely fantastic, and I cannot thank the community of Hebden Bridge enough for their over-whelming support. But it did mean that my forecasts used for ordering were not correct. We were in fact 5x busier than what I has optimistically predicted. However, we are now more settled and have revised business models. As such, all 5 pumps have ales on with reserves in place. This weekend we have, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Golden Best, Black Sheep, Pride of Pendle, and our closest local brewer Slightly Foxed session ale. And we now keep a LOT of tonic in the cellar. We very much hope to see you again soon. Kind regards and best wishes. Michael.

We had eaten at the White Lion a couple of times in the past under the old management and to say that we were dissappointed was an understatement so we were excited to hear that it was under new management and had just re-openned following a costly refurbishment. The experience couldn't have been more different from our previous ones - it was extremely busy (always a good sign) and there were no free tables but the very helpful waitress happily booked us a table for an hour's time so we went off to do some shopping. When we returned the staff and manager were extremely friendly and we had a table waiting. The food was excellent and the place has been done lovely inside, keeping all the olde worlde charm but without the peeling wallpaper and threadbare carpets of old! Will definitely recommend eating here to anyone looking for a classy pub dining experience.

We don't normally write reviews, but we felt compelled on this occasion! We booked into this hotel for a weekend with friends, where we all stayed. Admittedly, the hotel is in need of a refurbishment, which the helpful and friendly manager said they were just about to undertake - and spend close to half a million pounds in the process! But despite the obvious need to update, we could not fault anything else at all. We were welcomed very warmly with polite conversation, shown to our rooms (which were very clean and tidy, with everything you would require), and asked to request anything that we needed whilst we were staying in the hotel. We had one of the courtyard cottages, which was lovely. Very peaceful and with a superb view of the river and hills - you could even hear the river as you drifted to sleep! The food at the hotel was excellent - really good 'pub' food. All the staff were very friendly and most helpful. According to one member of staff, there was a new owner to the hotel who started in Sept and is organising the refurbishment. We cannot wait, and will certainly be back to see it finished!

We went back after a 2 years, ( No Room at the Inn) The downstairs bar & lavatory looked exactly as it did 2 years ago, tired, thread bare and in desperate need of some refurbishment....

We ordered a sandwich each & a local ale all served by a very pleasant young woman who I think I recognised from the last visit.

The beer from what I could tell was lovely and the sandwiches were a very pleasant surprise lovely fresh bread & fillings, a garnish with a balsamic dressing & lovely fresh crisp chips, really really nice.

I do hope that this is the turning point for what should be a vibrant land mark of Hebden Bridge....there were men & women in 'suits' in the next room..I hope they were planning the improvements that this lovely 300 year old Inn deserves.

Dear Madam

Many thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to post a review. Sincere apologies for the lengthy delay in responding - we have just been incredibly busy with the refurbishment and then with December after opening. I would love for you to see what happened as a result of 'those men in suits'. As part of that meeting, I managed to secure a total £400k refurbishment of the entire premises.; and complete over-haul of food, drinks, and service models. Really hope to see you again and to hear what you may think to the refurbished White Lion... Thanks again, and hope to see you soon. Michael.
