“Depends on your expectations”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

As a climber for many years, and an ageing one, I probably approach Rokt with a different view from most people. First I'm put off by the name climbing GYM. A gym suggests exercise for the sake of keeping fit or losing weight but a climbing WALL as I prefer should be much more than that - it should be social and fun. And to be fair I think Rokt try to make it fun, just incite unfortunate negative overtones with the name. As a climber of diminishing ability there are nowhere near enough roped routes for me to climb. The spread of grades is definitely targeted at young, athletic climbers and leaves the rest of us rather fraught. Having discussed Rokt with many of my climbing friends they all agree and many have given Rokt this feedback but it seems to be ignored. Shame. Also many of the roped routes are in the confines of the old flour silos which it limited to small numbers of people and rather anti-social. The bouldering available is very varied and quite imaginative, although again it is directed towards the fitter younger clients with a very high proportion being on steep ground, and too much of it being traversing. More vertical and slabby bouldering would be better for most of us. So I will use Rokt infrequently even though I live within 2 miles. BUT for kids, groups, people starting out in climbing etc the enthusiasm of the Rokt owners and staff is exemplory and the adventurous layout of the building exciting. Well worth at least one visit to draw your own conclusions.

“Great place!”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Visited ROKT shortly before its grand opening. Leigh is great, he spent time telling us about his ideas etc and over the last year we've seen these developing. Have to admit we haven't been for ages but this is because we've just bought our first house. There's plenty on offer at ROKT and we can't wait to get some time to go back

“fantastic place - full of possibilities for utter novice or expert (I guess!)”
Reviewed April 16, 2012

Went to see this place on spec with our young kids to check out childrens party options (they do them, and a kids club) and happened upon ROKT's 1 yr since opening open day/party.

I'm an utter novice at climbing so this review is probably hopeless for proper climbers and crammed with inept technical descriptions....but for the other Newby/ies amongst you...

First impressions are wow this place is big! It's in an old flour mill in central Brighouse with a tall tower where the main (lead?) climbing walls are. Some helpfully incline and suit begginers, others rather cruelly seem to do the opposite. All of them go a very long way up. If you're a brave beginner you have the chance to go really quite high (obviously with instructor support) but no-one makes you feel bad for going just as far as you feel comfortable.

But it's the breadth of the place that really staggers. There's a huge array of bouldering walls and spaces (i.e. where you don't need ropes and can do routes across walls...or onto overhanging cieling rocks or whatever). Some are very low and aimed at young kids, others look like you'd need some kind of gravity inversion to tackle them.

On the open day you could also abseil down the outside of the building, do a tight rope ('slack line'? ) across the river or squirm through the innards of a surreal cave bus. That won't be on normally, but was great to try out and think there might be occassional repeat appearances.

The other thing we liked was the overall feel - really welcoming and informal, full of enthusiasm and with staff who couldn't be more helpful. There's a small bar and cafe too. Prices of that and the activities all seemed very reasonable.

Bottom line was our 6 yr old son loved it and would like to come back. I'm sure we will.
