This is a wonderful, non-touristy authentic medieval Tuscan village. Be sure to take in the small archery/armory museum.

Recently got married in Certaldo Alto, and were made very welcome. Certaldo Alto is a Medieval centre, which is untouristy and unspoilt, and our wedding day was wonderful.

Unspoilt and very picturesque, the old town on top of the hill is a brilliant place for a wander. You can get a return trip on the funicular railway for €1.50 if you don't fancy the walk up. A few gorgeous coffee shops and restaurants make for perfect resting spots to take in the views and soak up the medieval atmosphere away from the tourist throngs in the more popular and well known locations of the area.

This review is of Certaldo Alto, the largely uncommercialised medieval part of Certaldo, separated from it at the top of a hill. We had limited time in Florence but made a point of coming back to see Certaldo Alto again after six years because we loved the feeling of the past (if you ignore the TV aerials) without hordes of other tourists.
Trains run regularly between Florence and Siena through here, and it's easy to find the old town from the railway station if you know how! From the station, just walk the 300m along Via 2 Giugno that runs square to the railway line and opposite the station entrance. Directly in front of you at the T-junction at the end, within the terraced buildings is the entrance to a funicular railway which we strongly recommend taking. It's easy to miss even if you're looking out for it.
We searched out a restaurant which we stumbled across last time - Ristorante L'Antica Fonte. It has an amazing panorama from the rose terrace and you can see the towers of San Gimignano on the horizon to the south. On a May afternoon we had the terrace almost to ourselves. Magical!

Certaldo is only one of many charming medieval hill towns in Tuscany, but it is as beautiful as any of them, and it has the twin advantages of being easily accessible by public transportation from Florence and of having relatively few tourists. The views across the valley are memorable, too. We love to go there when we have visitors who want to see more of Tuscany than just Florence. Highly recommended.
