“A little gem not found in your guide books!”
Reviewed January 9, 2008

We asked around in Granada about places to stay in San Juan. Everyone we asked recommended La Posada Azul, so we decided to give it a try.

The entire place was very well kept, wonderful staff, and beautiful rooms. It is right in the center of the town near the beach and restaurants.

My favorite part was breakfast. We were there for 5 days and each morning we were served a new dish. We had the traditional gallo pinto with eggs, Spanish tortilla, and huevos rancheros to name a few. Additionally each morning they serve a fresh squeezed fruit juice and homemade baked goods.

They have lots of books and magazines, but no televisions in the rooms. We welcomed the calm and relaxed get away, but if you require a TV of your own you may want to book elsewhere.

There is a very quiet pool with an honor bar, fresh towels and a palapa as well.

First things first: the breakfasts are AMAZING. Creative, lots of variety, somewhat Mexican-inspired ,with a different fresh-squeezed juice every day and plenty of good coffee. Can't say enough about the staff and their hospitality, especially Maria.

Kick back beside the pool and finish those books you brought with you! Don't worry, time doesn't really matter here...

This is a gem. North American quality and service at a Central American price in an area surrounded by gorgeous scenery, beaches, and a quaint underdeveloped town.
Although this is categorized as a B&B, it's more like a great six-room boutique hotel. True, the breakfasts are astoundingly good, and there is no room-service, but the facilities are in keeping with a much larger property. Huge common areas, with a beautiful pool, honor-system cold drinks, separate lounge with cable TV and DVD's. Wireless internet connectivity throughout the property.
The bedrooms (Casita #6 is the quietest) are a good size with split system silent aircon and ceiling fans. Good new linens and down pillows. This place would do justice to a town like Santa Fe where the owners come from.
The staff are extremely friendly but still efficient in dealing with just about any need. And the town is just outside the door (but a world away if you need to escape). For restaurants, try El Timon on the beach for seafood, and El Colibri 4 blocks inland by the church for the best Mediterranean food at ridiculously low prices.

La Posada Azul is truly enchanting. The rooms are spacious and spotless. The outdoor patio and pool area make you feel like you are in your own private retreat. The personal touches and very well done decor are first rate (you don't feel like you are staying in a hotel). To make things even better, the complimentary breakfast they serve is a complete breakfast; it is fresh and tasty and different every morning. The staff is friendly and efficient and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. We would definitely stay there again.

San Juan del Sur is a small town on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. We decided to take the ‘chicken bus’ from Grenada- the name given to the refurbished yellow school buses from the United States. The trip turned out to be a memorable experience. Someone will put your luggage on the roof for you, and en route you’ll get a firsthand look at the surroundings and the people.

Arriving in San Juan del Sur about 2 hours later, we checked in to La Posada Azul, an intimate, country style inn with only 6 rooms. The inn, formerly a residence of the mayor of San Juan del Sur, had only been open for 6 weeks, and our time there turned out to be the highlight of our trip.

Entering the inn you feel instantly welcomed. The white and blue colour scheme provide a backdrop to common living rooms, the open air dining room and connecting hallway, with the bedrooms on one side. At the back of the inn are an outdoor bar, a swimming pool, and two cages of tropical parrots that are sure to capture your attention.

The antique décor and the wicker furnishings of La Posada are historical reminders of the past. George Ann & Don Scharbag, owners from Santa Fe, New Mexico have spent many hours to create a unique and special experience for guests.

It’s not surprising that many have already discovered the privacy of La Posada, and spend time relaxing by the pool or reading a book from the hotel library. One of the recent guests was Heath Ledger, who co-starred in “Brokeback Mountain”.

For day trips, the numerous beaches and the surfers’ waves of SJDS are only a few minutes away, and there’s always horseback riding in the mountains overlooking the town.

The local port is becoming busier and deep-sea fishing trips are being introduced. One afternoon we cruised along the south coast of the Pacific and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. All six people on board caught a fish that meant that tuna was on the menu for dinner that night. The afternoon culminated with a spectacular sunset on the horizon, just as we sighted a whale bringing up its tail to salute us.

Tourism in Nicaragua is in its infancy. It is a poor country that welcomes tourism investment. However, the government must ensure that future development is planned and regulated in order to preserve the integrity and beauty of this inviting country.

Beautiful grounds in a great location. Rooms are very nice though lacking the unique decor one might expect in an "upscale" property. Breakfast is good... the fresh blended juices and baked goods are a nice touch to reasonably inspired offerings. Coffee is great. Wireless internet is available though no on-site guest computer; drag your laptop along or go to "Cyber Leo's" around the corner to check email. Staff is only adequately knowledgeable in arranging local activities...and charges for phone calls to make any reservations. Aura goes well beyond what is expected...outstanding and cheerful service! Thanks for a nice stay in San Juan del Sur.

We were looking for a hotel with lots of character.. La Posada Azul was perfect! It is an older "plantation" style home that has been converted to a 6 room hotel. It has all hardwood floors, tastefully decorated and cozy rooms, an antique filled sitting room, and outdoor, covered area with a bar....right next to a small, private swimming pool. Breakfast is served outdoors, on the porch..it was wonderful! Best of all...the hotel is only a few steps away from the great open air restaurants lining the beach at San Juan Del Sur! Enjoy your stay, you'll want to come back! Elaine Kaiser
