“BEST VACATION”
Reviewed July 25, 2012

I'd come back here a million times over. Was a v much last minute trip (sorry Brooke!!), the whole staff was so accommodating even when I emailed the night before to arrange a car to pick us up.

My friend and I bought the vacation via Groupon, but I didn't expect the hotel to be this nice. We had a two bedroom villa, complete with full kitchen, living room, a balcony on the one bedroom and a patio on the other. Was plush with greenery. Coming from New York, between the fauna and natural wildlife and the smell of fresh air was a welcome change. The villa was spotless every day. Staff was sooo nice. Were very helpful in arranging any activities we attempted to make. Spoke v good English. Food was delicious and so fresh. Think I hate fish twice a day. There was a truck or cart of sorts to take you down to the beaches and the town. WIll be going back at least once this year and ideally stay longer than 5 days. Could use a solid month at a place like this.

Thanks for the hospitality folks at Villa de Palermo Hotel!

My wife and I have stayed here several times - taking advantage of the "Visa Renewal" offer. The Palermo picks us up at the border with Costa Rica, and brings us to the resort. After three days they return us in time to meet the bus.

The villa had two bedrooms, one upstairs, one down. There is a kitchen (which we did not use). There is a pool, and a free shuttle into town which we DID use. (The Palermo Hotel is slightly inland on a hill; too far to walk to the ocean. The town is on the beach.) The villa had a back patio with comfortable wooden rocking chairs.

If there was a spa or fitness center we have not found it. Tha manager is very concerned with the visitors and asks how things are. (He speaks English in additional to Spanish.)

We are planning another trip to San Juan del Sur, staying at the Palermo.

Room Tip: We have stayed at several villas - all have been excellent. The villas are "stand alone"...

We stayed at the Villas de Palermo for this past month and are certainly planning to come back. This was actually our second time here, but the first extended stay. I believe the villas are the best choice for accommodation for couples and families in SJDS for the following reasons: location; amenities; and staff/service.

Location: The villas are tucked away on a hillside above town. It is just far enough out of SJDS to not hear the ample nightlife, but it is close enough to walk into town (about 25min walk to the town/beach). The hotel also offers a free shuttle service to and from town. This worked out perfectly for us because we didn't want to rent a car for a month (the trip wasn't about exploring, just relaxation). My wife is pregnant and we have a one year old, so the shuttle to town was very convenient. I really feel that Palermo offers the best of both worlds: secluded privacy and access to town.

Amenities: Each villa has a functional and equipped kitchen and there is also a restaurant (that offers room service), so you are really free to choose whether you want to cook for yourself some meals, eat at the restaurant, or eat in town. This flexibility was attractive with a one year old. The villas also have air conditioning and a ceiling fan.

The pool is lovely and was just steps away from our villa. I literally took my son swimming 3/day.

The restaurant has a short, but excellent menu. Everything that we ate was great. We found ourselves ordering the churrasco and pepito sandwich regularly.

Staff/Service: The staff at Palermo were excellent. I didn't have a single bad experience in a month of daily interaction. I commend all of them for their commitment to service and really care for their guests.

For example: Our son got very sick while we were in town one day. What was a bad situation, could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for the staff at the Palermo. Victor, one of the shuttle drivers at Palermo, not only looked for us when we didn't show up at the rendezvous spot to be picked up (due to the baby being so ill), but also found us and took us immediately to the health center; translated for us (my Spanish isn't great) at the center; got us in to see a doctor; and then took us to the pharmacy to get the medicine. Our son recovered very quickly. We are so thankful for the "above and beyond" service that we received. The following day waitress from the Palermo restaurant even brought our son a "get well soon" avocado (his favorite food) when she heard that was sick. It is this level of service that keeps people coming back.

Everyone was excellent, but a special thanks goes out to Victor, Max, and Jada for all that they did to make our stay the best it could be.

Room Tip: There are 50 villas that go up the hillside that backs into a rainforest. If you prefer extra seclus...

We stayed here for over a month and enjoyed it immensely. The grounds are well kept, but still natural feeling, the staff is very friendly and the resort blends top notch attentiveness and responsiveness with the easy, unhurried pace that you want in a place like this. The restaurant was once run by one of the best gourmet chefs in Nicaragua and it has retained the presentation and flavor that he instilled there. Every meal was enjoyable. We taught the bar staff how to make ice-coffees, which they wrinkled their noses at, but eventually got quite good at.

I think the most universally enjoyable aspect of this place was the people. From the front desk to the guard gate, to the groundsmen and shuttle driver - everyone was friendly, easy to ask a question or just to shoot the breeze with in my poor but improving spanish (thanks to the fact that this whole part of the world has only partially adopted the English lingua franca.)

The pool was clean, the views were amazing from the upper two rows of rooms, the yoga platform we enjoyed frequently under the instruction of excellent US and local teachers and the free shuttle to and from town was quite a perk. The low cost of everything only adds to the feeling of value and enjoyment. This place also has the most thorough maid service I have EVER experienced. Our cleaning person would arrive and spend up to the three hours cleaning each day. We got spoiled leaving our dishes in the sink and clothes on the floor only to find everything in its place on our return. Of course there is a little more to clean here during the rainy season with the bug invasions and dirty shoes but without fail the place was good as new each day.

The units themselves are really well done with nice finishes (but there was a little to be desired on the "fit" raising the electricity bill if you choose to use A/C), decorations and a sufficient collection of appliances, utensils and dishes for a family of four. I accidentally drank the water from the sink the first week mistakenly remembering that it was filtered but did not get sick (did not get sick at all during the whole month here, actually) despite the roughly two gallons I gulped down each day to allow the sweat to pour out while cycling (great road quality and great mountain bike terrain out the back door door), hiking (also out the back door) or hanging out at the pool where I was more likely to enjoy a Victoria served ice-cold or brought down from our own refrigerator.

If I had to find a fault it would be with the Internet service which, despite the management's attempt to provide redundancy was often down and always slow at 500 kb/sec. But each unit did have its own wireless router with free service. The whole town's Internet and electricity for that matter was often down while we were there which we was told was becoming much more infrequent after recent regional upgrades.

Room Tip: The middle row of condos are the best with views and without the last steep hike! Units 16-18 are al...

Our family just came back from a great trip to SJDS, staying at the Villas for 6 nights. They were super clean, in a great location, with very helpful staff. We loved swimming in the pool each afternoon and meeting other friendly people and families enjoying the laid-back Nicaraguan lifestyle. It was nice to have the free shuttle available to get you into town and the front desk was great at helping to organize activities and day excursions as needed. Overall, a very relaxing, wonderful place to enjoy a vacation!

I stayed at the Villas with 5 of my girlfriends for a long weekend. We bought 2 Groupon deals for 2 villas and had MORE than enough space (there was 6 adults...plus a toddler). The food at Palermo is great, and the pool is lovely. We joined the yoga class on Friday morning (it is held right off of the pool - amazing way to start the day), and then just walked over for a full day of food and lounging by the pool. The following day we rented a boat, and went to a lovely secluded beach for the afternoon (highly recommend). Overall, this far exceeded any of our expectations - villas were clean, well maintained, and spacious. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the Groupon deal made this trip even nicer! Would recommend for couples, groups, and families.
