Playa Hermosa Beach Hotel
Reviewed October 4, 2013

The hotel sits on the most beautiful beach I have ever seen on the Pacific. The water was clear down to about 8 feet and had an emerald tint to it. It's in the middle of a national park and there's nothing but deserted beach and trees around so there's not much to do here but that's the point. I went to surf and was a little disappointed because the waves were small but some locals told me the surfing is usually better. Don't expect much in terms of lodging, it's called a hotel but it's more like camping in a cabin. There were frogs and crabs in our room but we didn't have a problem with bugs as other reviewers mentioned. There are a ton of stingrays though but it's clear enough to see them and seeing a school swim by is quite beautiful.

Stayed with my family of 4 in one of the ocean-view suites. Truly amazing beach and awesome to be able to check the surf right from your hotel room. The beds are comfortable and bathrooms decent for such a rustic out of the way place. The kids were psyched to walk out the door and hit the beach. At first, we were psyched that the prices were roughly similar to San Juan Del Sur, but with much better beach access.

As other reviewers have said - definitely DO thoroughly check your mosquito net for holes and USE it! We had one bed with holes in the net. Not a good night! Mosquitos are a reality in these climates though, so just be smart about protection.

We had 3 main problems with the hotel, which made us want to cut our stay short even though we could have stayed another night or two.

1. Stingrays! My husband was stung while playing with our kids in the shallows. Thankfully, it wasn't one of my daughters that got hit! The staff knew immediately what to do (put the sting site in a bucket of hot water). I was thankful they knew how to treat it, as it's an extremely painful sting. But it was only after (a) seeing another person get stung, (b) actually SEEING a ray in the waves 10 feet from my daughters, and (c) having a surfer report he paddled over a ray that I realized the staff knew how to treat because it must happen ALL THE TIME. We have since heard that this beach is known by locals for having a lot of rays. IMO, the front desk should warn people of this and offer tips for preventing stings. My girls were terrified to go into the water, and I have to admit, my husband and I weren't that interested either.

2. Don't pay by credit card. They advertise they take credit cards, then tacked on an extra $40+ USD on a 2 night stay for the privilege of using the card. I'm ok with credit card surcharges in the 2-4% range to offset what the credit card company charges. But this was highway robbery - and as another poster said - you're pretty much trapped until you pay up.

3. Cushions would be nice. Egads, but the furniture was god awful uncomfortable, whether in the room, reception, restaurant, or beach palapas. All hardwood, no cushions, and not conducive to lounging at all.
Quick note on the comfort front too - my family are all avid campers and experienced hostel travelers. We are quite accustomed to "roughing it."

For what we ended up paying, we were pretty disappointed by the lack of comfort and the lack of ability to really enjoy the beautiful beach.

Great place to stay for a few days to learn surfing or just to get away. This is the only hotel on the beach and is a popular location for day trips/surf lessons; there will be lots of surfers during the day but the beach really quiets down after 4pm. Perfect if coming with a group of friends as it can get a bit boring at nights when everyone leaves. Excellent wifi connectivity.

We stayed there four nights before crossing the border to Guanacaste in Costa Rica. Playa Hermosa is a few klms out of SJDS but that is a good thing as you are away from tourist traps and rows of bars and restaurants. It is a private beach from what I could gather with access restricted to hotel guests and those coming for the daily surf lessons. We loved our stay. Truly beautiful, safe and long beach. You are a bit isolated from the real world but that is what we wanted - and they do not take advantage of this and charge exorbitant prices for food and drink. Everything was good value. They saved some baby turtles also while we were there - and waited patiently until they were strong enough to venture into the sea and then we all went and watched these tiny turtles venture out to open sea for the first time.

Ok first of all the spot where playa is situated is gorgeous. Its the only hotel on the beach. All the staff are people from the community and they are all amazing and really nice. There is surf right in front for every level. They give free transport from san juan, and you can do excursion. The only restaurant where you can eat is the one from the hotel, but that's really not a problem cuz the food is amazing and really cheap, you can have lobster for 9 Us. At night you have the beach to yourself. But i got to warn the room is clean and you have a toilet and a shower, but its a bit like camping, there is some bug, you have a net over your bed thet block most of the bug but some still pass, dont forget insect reppelant. We had a great time there but we got to fight with the bug ;)

Room Tip: Take the room number 5 got a great balcon and an amazing view

Although we didn't stay at this hotel, we did spend most of the day enjoying the quiet, secluded beach. Being low season, we ended up sharing the beach with only a handful of other vacationers. It felt as though we had the entire place to ourselves. It was great, the water was warm and the sand was soft. After walking along the beach and enjoying the large waves we decided to sit back and relax in the hammocks while sipping on a cold beer. Playa Hermosa is worth the taxi ride from San Juan del Sur.

It is worth taking the shuttle or a cab to reach this beach, it is less famous than others in the area and then so much more peacefull! Entrance fee to the beach is free if you overnight if I remember wel, and the hostal shuttle also gives you a better price if you spend the night. Sea view rooms are simple but so much worth it for its vieuw right on the beach. Friendly staff, good cocktails and some happy hours which is even better:-) Food is available though you might not notice, so ask for it becasue the seafood is the best one I have in the country!! I recommend it:-)

Room Tip: Book in advance! especially if you want a private sea view room (only 2 available I think)
