We stayed at the El Pacifico Hotel in San Juan del Sur in late January. Because we were staying for a week, we checked out all of the hotels in town that offered a pool. Only the El Pacifico and the Victoriano measured up – most have only tiny plunge pools and don’t get much sunshine. We chose the El Pacifico because, at $40/night, it was less than half the price of the Victoriano.

The El Pacifico is one of the few hotels located north of the river, one block back from the north end of the beach on the quiet street leading to the statue on the hill. While there are no restaurants or stores nearby, it is a short walk across the pedestrian bridge into town. The hotel consists of three two-story buildings and a large palapa-style building that houses the restaurant and a lounging area with a large book exchange. The rooms are spacious with hot water and air conditioning. Each room has a small deck or patio with a couple of chairs. The pool, while small and with only a few loungers, is nicely laid out and is beautifully maintained. Although a breakfast is included in the room rate, it’s a meagre one of coffee, juice and toast. With the amount of money we saved by staying here, we splurged by ordering from the menu for about $5/day. We walked into town every night to watch the sunset and have dinner. The restaurants all seem to have similar menus, quality of food and prices – we paid about $20 for dinner for two and a couple of drinks each.

Unless you are a surfer, there isn’t a lot to do in San Juan del Sur other than lounging around the pool or beach. It is worth taking a hike up to the statue on the hill – the view is spectacular. We also went zip-lining, which is a lot of fun! We spent one evening driving down to the La Flor Wildlife Refuge to try to see the Olive Ridley turtles that lay their eggs at this time of year. The drive is about an hour over a fairly rough road (like a logging road in North America). If you try it yourself, the best bet is to find the refuge in the afternoon when it is light (it would be almost impossible after dark unless you know where to look), then head to El Coco beach for a long, leisurely dinner before going back to the refuge where you may have to wait to midnight or later. Better yet, just take one of the excursions from town!

If you are looking for peaceful, well-run small hotel in San Juan del Sur, the El Pacifico is for you.
