Casa de Olas is a beautiful tastefully designed hostel I highly recommend to every traveler staying in San Juan del Sur. If you are a surfer / backpacker they have a dorm room ($11), but we stayed in one of their beautiful, clean double bedroom ($35). The Australian couple Carla and Fred who run the hostel are the perfect host, just wonderful friendly people with a big heart. These 3 days were all about unwinding, relaxing, great vibes, swimming in their infinity pool and enjoying the breathtaking views (bay and ocean in the front, mountain forests at the back). Every evening we would have a delicious diner all together at one long table like one big family and after that watch a movie on a big white screen or have a few drinks at the bar. Carla and Fred can also arrange you to see the turtles lay their eggs / see baby turtles run to sea, an experience everyone should have on their bucket list. If you are looking for something special, this is definitely the place for you!! We love this place!

Thanks Fred, Carla, Bee and Buzz ( resident monkey) for an unforgettable experience.

Everything was perfect, not a fault in any area. Don't waste your time at other hostels, go straight past naked tiger to casa!!! A little slice of heaven.

This is a fantastic little spot up the hill and away from most other establishments. We started staying here after the town fell under a mandatory evacuation for a tsunami warning because it seemed like a safe place--and then found it hard to leave. Very good vibe, the couple who run the hostel are the sweetest and so entertaining. The rooms are large with comfortable mattresses and big bathrooms. There is an optional family style dinner at night which is absolutely worth it and Fred will sometimes cook up hot dogs during the day for pool-side snacks. There is a little bit of a party vibe here on busy nights, but they shut everything down at 11pm so guests can sleep if they want and those who want to party can go to the hostel next door.
We stayed in room 5 which is cave-like for sleeping in. Room 1 is the honeymoon suite and has the best light.
You can tell your taxi driver that the hostel is next to the naked tiger hostel if they don't know where it is, and we were almost always able to talk them down to 100 cordobas (about 4$) for the ride up the hill.
Don't go with the gardener, Chili, to see the turtles at night--take a proper tour. Chili doesn't have a lot of interest in nature education ;-)
Thanks Carla and Fred! Can't wait to go back!

Just back from a three-week trip around Central America and Casa de Olas was the absolute highlight. Everything about the place from Buzz the monkey, to the beautifully appointed rooms was spot-on. Carla and Fred, who run the hostel, are the perfect hosts and immediately made myself and my friend feel at home. They did everything from host some lovely home-made dinners - to pack a lunch for us and some friends as we headed off on an early-morning fishing trips. We originally planned to stay just 2 days but extended our time there. I would absolutely recommend Case de Olas to anyone else traveling in the area. The view from the hostel is amazing - and it's the perfect place to hang-out and relax, as it comes equipped with a gorgeous infinity pool and a very reasonably priced bar. The rooms and dorm are kept in great condition and all in all, it was the best money I spent on the trip. Can't wait to go back.
Hannah.

Wow. Just returned from one week traveling through Nicaragua and spent my last few days at Casa de Olas- I literally almost skipped my flight and missed starting a new job because I could not leave. Carla and Fred are the nicest friendliest and funniest people and really create the best atmosphere. Everyone who walks in is welcomed completely by Fred Carla and all the guests as they really create a great community feel. The place is very clean (I stayed in private rooms but dorms were clean as well), the view is amazing, and food was the best I had on my trip. The pet monkey Buzz is so fun to play w for hours. Also, if you really want to party hard you can walk next door to Naked Tiger, about 20 seconds walk and then just come back whenever you want a little more quiet. That's not to say Casa de Olas didn't have it's own fun times partying there at day and night- just not quote as crazy as Tiger. Next time I take a trip anywhere it is starting back here, although not sure if I'll be able to leave. All in all, best hostel ever in a great fun town of San Juan del Sur.
