“The house is perfect and the area only gets better and better”

This is the 3rd time I have stayed at Casa Cresta. Every time we come we find another restaurant within walking distance of the house. Some of our favorites....The Secret Cove is great for shade and a cold tona while enjoying Marsella and the new Haiku hotel is fabulous. One HUGE improvement is the maintained trail through the jungle directly to Playa Maderas. Its a very well maintained trail with with switchbacks. Easy going to the beach, and a great workout coming home. We found a security guard at the trail entrance each time we used the trail. Nice with a big smile but was did his job and was curios if we were staying in the neighborhood. We will be back next year!

“nice private location”
Reviewed May 5, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

The positives regarding this house are first a nice owner who responded quickly and was very easy to deal with. A nice secluded location with beautiful birds, a nice pool to cool off and a fair price. The house sits about 9klm on a dirt road from san juan del sur between two beaches. The one beach within view of the house is peaceful with two restaurants, a great little local place and a not so good hotel restaurant called secrets. The other beach caters more to a back packing crowd and some wanna be hippy kids (that ship sailed 50 yrs ago) who need a bath and stick out in a country where the people pride themselves on cleanliness. We had a 4wheel drive which was a help as the last bit off road is steep and rutted. The house itself is very basic with concrete furniture. We ate almost all our meals out as food is cheap and good but would have had a difficult time using the kitchen if we were cooking. Only found two glass glasses in entire house, no wine glasses and husband cleaned coffee maker as it had old product in it and was clogged, master shower has constant water leak in an area where water is a commodity. There is a nice caretaker who lives in an attached building. He came in the morning to sweep or manage the pool. As we were a couple we would have appreciated a little more privacy in the morning as master doors are wide open to pool. Overall for the price we were happy and for a group it is a real value

“Hidden gem!”

This gorgeous Spanish style house high up on the hill far exceeded our expectations! We were on a budget, looking for something to escape the crowds and relax for a few days and found this affordable palace. It was perfect! The house is luxurious yet simple. Stunning views from the rooftop of ocean views. Wild howler monkeys surround the house and wild birds all around. It really felt like an escape! The kitchen was a highlight! It was easy to cook every meal, with the market at the bottom of the road.
The family that watches over the property are so lovely and helpful! A couple music nights by the pool didn't even phase them.
The pictures don't even justify how fabulous this place is!
It was also really easy to organise staying here. The owner Dan got back to me instantly and the vacation rental company were great! They gave us a lift to the house and made the entire thing very simple.
Will definitely be back!

“Yours to enjoy....”
Reviewed March 30, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

In the hills between Playa Madera and Playa Marsella , this amazing home lets you get away from it all. Great kitchen, a pool outside your bedroom and a Captains Perch to take in the views both at day or night ! Grab the bus into town from Casa Madera , about a 10 minute walk down the hill, half hour into town.. getting back up is a good work out , so for some an SUV or other mode of transport may work out. Care takers Eddie and Anna are handy right next door and are there and at your service if and when needed...3 bedrooms , 2 bathrooms and plenty of out door deck space... this is an amazing place ...2 beaches , each about a 10-15 minute walk away with lots to see and do along the way, Howling monkies, wildlife , etc , Madera beach offers all the surfing you can handle with a couple of neat places to grab a bite or a cold Tona beer, walk to the right on Madera beach all the way to the end where you will find Matildas little food shack and a neat looking surfers hostel . Friendly people, the bustling town of San Juan just a half hour away , the Casa Cresta offers the perfect escape from it all...

“Secluded, beautiful”

The layout of this house was perfect for our group of 5. The couple had a secluded quarter with en suite bathroom, and the 3 single people split two rooms and a bathroom. The common area was big and spacious, with a great indoor area for group dinners and outdoor area for lounging in hammocks or the little pool. The captain's perch is a terrace at the top of the house where we had wine and watched the sun set.

The location is beautiful and secluded. It was a 6-7 minute downhill walk to the nearby Casa Maderas, where I had amazing yoga daily, good food, and caught a shuttle to town. Returning to the house was up the hill, which can be exhausting with bags of groceries, but we all grew to love the hill and felt we were burning off dessert. If you are easily winded or are battling a leg joint injury, this hill is not for you (rent a jeep).

The house is also near to Maderas Beach, which has a great surf, beautiful natural landscape, beautiful sand, and some little bar/restaurants. The surf is perfect for learning to stand on your surf board. We also never encountered a crowd.

Marsella Beach is also within walking distance from the house, although a little farther (the shortcut has been fenced off). This beach is gorgeous and quiet. Try the fish tacos at the north end restaurant.

The house staff lives on the property and was always available to help. A bit of spanglish helped this relationship. We befriended his lovely dogs, but it pulled at some heart strings to see the dogs tethered all day, all night (most of us are dog people).

If you are looking for a getaway with a group that offers some of the comforts of home, then this is a great option. There is a little work involved (there's no front desk, no cleaning staff, no regular hotel/restaurant service), but it's worth it.

The house is stocked with some supplies (toilet paper, filtered water jug), but when they run out, you have to purchase more. There is a blender, toaster, and coffee maker, and some basic spices. There are dishes and pots/pans. We used a towel to lay out cleaned dishes, but the place could really use a drying rack. The gas stove runs on a propane tank, and there is a microwave. There are towels.

The wifi is fantastic.

I woke early each day and heard howler monkeys in the valley.

The owner was easily available by email. Overall an easily coordinated experience.

“Pretty but Underwhelmed”

We wanted so much to love this place, but it just fell a bit short of expectations.

Pros:
Nice house, good a/c, gorgeous views

Cons:
1. We had arranged for 7 of us to stay at the house, but the place only had 6 towels, and when we asked if we could get more, we were told that's all there was. Not even hand towels in the bathroom. I know a lot of places are basic, but this the kind of thing that's really useful to know in advance, so we could have brought our own. Also, there was no laundry, so we stayed for 4 nights, and had to use the same 6 towels the whole time--given the beach and the pool, it's just not great. I e-mailed about this during our stay and received no response.

2. I don't know if it was just especially windy when we stayed there, but while Eddie dutifully cleaned the pool every morning, by noon it was full of leaves.

3. The shared bathroom was broken for the first 24 hours of our stay, so we ended up having to cram 7 people into the two bedrooms in the main house so everyone could access the only working bathroom, which was in the master bedroom. This room has a separate entrance from outside, so it was just a bit of a nuisance to deal with given young kids trying to use the bathroom at night. Again, I e-mailed about this but got no response.

4. The house is over a kilometer up/down steep hills to the beaches. We were thinking we'd be fine without a car since the beaches were walkable, but if you're staying here, you really do need a vehicle with high clearance and 4wd.

5. The kitchen had only salt in it--no oil, pepper, nada. Since there are very few restaurants in walking distance (which is minimum 10 minutes away) and the kitchen is big, it would be nice if there were more basics available for cooking.
