If you're in the San Juan del Sur area, I definitely recommend heading over to Playa Maderas beach for some of the best surfing in the area. Staying at the Dreamcatcher House is a great way to experience the amazing waves while chilling out with some amazing people. The community vibe creates a great opportunity to connect with other travelers - a definite bonus if you are traveling by yourself. The guys who run the place are totally awesome, laid back and will for sure show you a good time. The great food, amazing atmosphere, and proximity to the waves all make for a great place to stay while visiting Playa Maderas!

I had a lovely time at Dreamcatcher. Your hosts genuinely want you to enjoy the experience and participate in it with you. Open, sharing, comfortable environment with excellent meals prepared with local ingredients by three beautiful Nica sisters, surf lessons with Juan Carlos, yoga with Abe, lots of Tonas (the local cerverza), lazing around in the hammocks and gazing at the stars and ocean from the rooftop, a big library, great food options down at the beach (El Barrio has a wood burning pizza oven, yum). Opportunities to practice Spanish and learn about the local community. Surfing at Playa Maderas and other spots nearby. 45 mins to downtown San Juan del Sur via bus. Interesting travellers from all over. Abe, Dickie, Anthony, Juan Carlos, Alvaro, and the entire Dreamcatcher family son muy buena onda. Highly recommend, hope to return.

I spent 10 days at the Dreamcatcher house and loved every second of it. The place itself is amazing – sitting atop a hill overlooking the Playa Maderas surf break (one of the best surf breaks in all of Central America BTW!). Beautiful wood work, amazing decks to hang out and enjoy the view (the views are epic!), and hammocks everywhere to sit back and read a surf magazine. The rooms are comfortable, beds are comfortable, and with the offshore winds even on the hottest night it’s still comfortable to sleep as there is pretty much always a breeze. The food, as others have noted, is absolutely amazing and so healthy and fresh. Don’t let the ‘healthy and fresh’ thing scare you though – it tastes good too! I was so amazed with the food every single day – and with the low cost of meals as an add-on, I don’t know how you could turn this option down.
So as I just described, yes the place is nice, but that’s not what sold me on it – it was the owners, the other guests, and the overall vibe of the house. The guys that run Dreamcatcher were the ultimate hosts. From the first couple hours I was there, I felt like I had life-long friends already, and felt comfortable with the place. They really make you feel ‘at home’ and are so supportive with helping you make any plans (rides to/from Managua, getting in to town, renting surfboards etc.) – they are all very knowledgeable of the area and great to talk to. When I go on vacation I usually just have a place to rest my head, and then spend 95% of my day outside doing stuff. At the Dreamcatcher I didn’t want to go anywhere else! Amazing conversation every single night around the dinner table (everyone eats together) and cool traditions like going around the table, and saying what your highlight of the day was. They really promote a positive atmosphere here and brighten your day – this place was not only extremely healthy for your body, but for your mind too. They are very environmentally conscious and extremely focused on reducing their footprint in nature, even with the construction of their cabanas. I really do envy the Dreamcatcher staff; I have tried to adopt their positive life choices here myself back home. The 10 days I spent with them were some of the best I’ve ever had on any trip I’ve been to in the world – and I feel like I’ve made friends that would last a lifetime. I’ve been home for a couple months and have still kept in contact.
With that said, this place may not be for everyone. Yes you may deal with the odd power outage, the odd bug, or the odd 5am wake up from a screaming howler monkey – if you got problems with these then you probably shouldn’t be going to Nicaragua anyways. But if you’re an open minded, free spirited person that loves to have a good time, good conversation, and meeting good friends; this place is for you.
With almost every place I stay I only visit once, because life is short and there’s way too much on this earth to see – but I can tell you 100% that I will be back to the Dreamcatcher house in the next year.

Greeted by the dynamic duo of Abe and Dickie! Wasn't planning to head up to Nicaragua from Costa Rica, but when Matt (Dickie) told me about this place, I couldn't resist. So happy I did - it was a great way to get away and relax and experience all that the local SJDS and Nica culture has to offer.

Days consisted of early rises (via howler monkey alarm clocks), fresh muffins waiting in the kitchen (pre-surf grub), boards by the back (grab n' go), short brisk walk through the trees (guided to the beach by the gorgeous flowers along the path), arrival at the well-known Playa Maderas for an addictive surf - didn't want to get out of the water! Maderas is great for beginner and advanced surfers alike - it has all types of waves. Back to Dreamcatcher for a full-on breakfast (w/ Lizano sauce of course), created by a local friend with great skill and passion. Did lots of reading (and if you need a new book, Dreamcatcher has a book exchange), always followed by a few drinks and another surf in the afternoon before an equally amazing dinner, usually consisting of fresh fish and local specialties....and maybe some yoga, or movie night after sunset!

Quick trips to San Juan del Sur for a visit to Pelican Eyes (worth it!) and Abe and Dickie were also eager to help facilitate a drop-off at the bus station for my quick trip to Granada - a beautiful Nicaraguan city who loves showcasing their food and have a love of baseball. Don't miss the crater either and the Monkey Hut.

Overall - if you're looking for a great location, basic accommodation, surf equipment at your fingertips, yoga, spectacular sunset views, delicious food and amazing hosts, Dreamcatcher is the right place! Oh, and cute dogs too.....don't miss out. When you go, say hi for me:)

Room Tip: Request the Dreamcatcher rooftop special:)

It was for me the most amazing experience abroad I ever had! incredible relaxing atmosphere and everybody were so friendly and supercool! Thanks Anthony, Dicky and Abram for this unforgettable experience!!! they made me falling in love with Nicaragua and I am actually planning to move down there in a few years!
Of course, surfing isn’t the only thing to do Dreamcatcher House; sport fishing, diving, snorkeling, nature walks, yoga and swimming are all just as convenient as the perfect waves. Walk down the hill, in 5 minutes, to most famous break in Nicaragua, Playa Madera at sunrise and sunset and you will find the monkeys gently swaying among the trees and taking in the cool ocean breezes..enjoy a cerveza at the beach after a beach volley match during sunset! wake up when the sunrise and relax with an amazing yoga class on the top floor of the house with a fabulous view of the bay! and when the sunset enjoy a few beers, stories, and make friends at the house!! did I miss something??!! just go and experience dreamcatcherhouse!!!
