The San Juan Del Sur beach is OK. The sand is nothing special and although the view is phenomenal, the beach is more of a habour for boats and ships than anything.
I must share that we were here around Christmas/New Years, and although in all public areas I could not have felt more safe, a group of six of us (three guys, three girls) wandered off to find a more private beach to the south. Although we did find it we had wandered off quite a distance down a dirt road and through bushes where we were mugged on our way back by three masked men with machetes in the middle of the afternoon. It never would have happened if we were in a public area but there isn't always security in numbers.
Try to not take money and valuables with you when on day trips if at all avoidable and stick to the town and/or guided tours. We were in a vulnerable location where these locals could easily take advantage of us and steal our things. We were advised not to contact local police as they are 'not your friends'.
Beautiful place and a fun party town, just use your head when out - both during the day and at night.
