With a few improvements, this place would be awesome. I really really wanted to like it. However, here's my take on it:

Pros:

The people. I absolutely loved everyone I met. So many interesting people from all over the world, and the owner and his staff were very friendly and helpful.

Super chill atmosphere. Ping pong, large kitchen, free pancakes on the weekends, surf rentals (although lots of the boards are missing fins??) and shuttles to the surrounding beaches. Everyone likes to hang out on the porch then hit up Iguana's or Black Whale together.

Common area. Lots of hammocks for chillin, free wi-fi, TV, books, etc.

Lots of light in the dorm rooms. Windows and fans help keep it cool and I love waking up to the sun coming in.

Cons:

Checked into the private room ($20/night), Lucky #7 the first two nights. It was dark, even during the day. Whatever, can't be helped. One of the first things I noticed was the ants on the bed. Tiny red ones, everywhere. I spent about half an hour meticulously brushing them off, although they were still all over the walls.

The shower in the private room was FILTHY! It looked like someone took a dump in there. It didn't drain very well either so you end up standing in the grossness. I ended up using the outdoor showers as those were much cleaner. We also didn't have towels or toilet paper in the private room, and the dorms did. Weird?

Cockroaches. These critters were everywhere. We moved out of the private room and into the dorms, only to find them there as well. One girl checked out b/c one was in her bed and then my boyfriend woke up to one right next to his head on the wall in the middle of the night. Yuck!

Only one public bathroom was available in the middle of the night. They lock the doors to the outdoor ones and the one upstairs was under construction. I assume this problem is being addressed, but when there are 20+ people in house, it makes it difficult to take a late night pee run.

In the end, I don't really want to hate on this place at all. Lots of people seemed to be having a great time. I just wasn't getting any sleep and the bugs were really bothering me. Stay here if you like to meet cool people and don't mind a little bit of creepy-crawly.

You really have to be a party person to enjoy this hostel (or even San Juan del Sur.)
There was loud music in the lobby till 12 o'clock at night.
The shared bathroom was pretty much always occupied, but clean and tidy.
The location is great, a few meters to the beautiful beach.
Kitchen included . . . always a plus as well as wi-fi.

I am of the believe that every hostel has its own atmosphere and I do have to say (could depend on the travelers that were there while I was) that I didnt much like the atmosphere. I wasnt really interested in talking to many of the people. No biggie, just saying.
Some of the people working at reception were annoying, others very, very kind.

Sleeping experience was great - nice mattresses.
Didn't mind staying here, but definitely minded the music at night!

I wasn't as impressed with this place as other reviewers. It's a friendly vibe, but the rooms are very basic (eg door to our bathroom didn't have a handle and didn't close properly, walls are paper thin and the place was pretty grotty, including the common bathroom downstairs. Seemed overpriced for what you get

Pachamama was my favorite hostel in San Juan. It was a great spot to meet other travellers - a cool vibe and cool people - a good mix from all over. There's always someone up for a party, but it's not so crazy that you can't relax, too.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms were windy - if you're a light sleeper, you might want to check them out first...

I planned to stay a couple nights in San Juan but ended up staying a week, had that much fun! Pacha Mama is a great place to stay. The rooms, common area and bathrooms are kept clean and there are plenty of bathrooms and showers. The hostel is pretty quiet and laid back during the day when most people are at the beach and then picks up after dinner when everyone is hanging out in the common area drinking and socializing. People from other hostels would also come by to hang out as well as some of the hostel employees who are as much fun as the travelers. At 11:00 pm the hostel closes down and everyone heads off to the bars together. While I was there a few Australian girls had a birthday party in the hostel, drinking games and a pinata, good times.

I've been to quite a few hostels, but Pachamama was definitely one of my faves! The owner, Alex, and his staff are very laid-back and approachable, the beds were incredibly comfortable and all the guests seemed to be having a great time! The bathroom was kept very clean, which is difficult to do when it's used by many people, and the outdoor chill area was a great place to have a few drinks and make new friends. The location can't be beat; it's right next to the beach and close to stores and the market. I noticed some reviewers complained that it was too noisy, but when enough people get together and Flor de Cana is so cheap, a party is bound to break out! I was actually impressed by how quickly everything quieted down right at 11 pm, sometimes it's tough to convince people to leave for the bar and you usually have some loud stragglers.
All in all, a great spot to stay, and definitely one I'll be seeing again :)
P.S I have no idea why the one dude is complaining about lack of girls. Pretty sure the chicas outnumbered the guys while I was there!

Staying at Hostel Pachamama was the best choice for our trip! The prices were right on target, we felt very SAFE there, clean (which was a nice change from other hostles we have visited) and the fun... well that was in full supply! The hangout area was full of fun people to hangout with and swap traveling stories. We completely recommend it!
