“Came back multiple times”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

This was our second trip to SJDS and between the first and second trip, El Gato Negro didn't change much. Still bustling place, still delicious breakfasts, still fantastic smoothies. Even if you don't typically enjoy smoothies, I PROMISE you will like El Gato Negro's.

Some people comment on the service, but to be honest you do figure out pretty quick that this is a flag-down the staff kind of place. It is super busy, mostly packed with Lonely Planet-ors but also locals and other visitors. Just make eye contact with someone, wave your hand, and I promise they will be there in a moment to help you.

Don't miss a breakfast here- they do it really good. I would recommend everything.

The used books are on the expensive side, but I came in prepared with trade-ins. If you see a book you like and have a good condition, fairly popular book they typically will make a deal.

Looking forward to coming back for another Einstein smoothie.

“Great atmosphere, good eats”

Spend some time chatting with the owners if you're new to Nicaragua and get the thumbnail overview of the past 17 years of the country's history. They roast Nicaraguan beans on site that they source from local farms, and that makes for a fine cup of java.

Food selection could be a bit broader and fuller-flavored, but you can get your day off to a good start here.

“Great Coffee Bar and Book store”

Best coffee in SJDS and an excellent selection of books. Open for Breakfast and lunch but not dinner, but that is OK as they do breakfast the best!

El Gato Negro is a great place for coffee, food and a large variety of smoothies. A little touch of home for N. Americans....

“Good Food but Poor Service”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

This is a buzzing expat hangout with creative and delicious menu items. However, the slow and inattentive service needs a serious upgrade. It looks like they don't have enough waitresses but regardless, this leads to long delays in ordering and eventual delivery of food.
