Villa Noche
Reviewed June 25, 2009

My wife and I just returned from one of the most exquisite weeks we’ve ever experienced. At the recommendation of friends who’d been there this Winter, we booked our Summer vacation at this glorious place. The only downside is that we couldn’t stay there forever!!!

The surrounding countryside was breathtaking. Each morning, we would take in the majestic views of the ocean and the mountains as we breakfasted on freshly squeezed mango juice and banana pancakes, prepared by the excellent staff (it was devastating to have to say goodbye to Memo and Armando).

Above and beyond the hiking and the seaside lounging, we fell in love with San Juan del Sur. Its relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals made it a permanent fixture in our future vacation destinations. The bay is positively incredible. We went on a fishing charter (Aquaholic) offered through Villa Noche and, at the end of the day, returned home with a bountiful array of fish that the staff cooked up into an exquisite seafood feast.

And, although our purpose was to get as far away from our lives back home as possible, the high speed wireless connection throughout the house was a definite plus. On more than one night I found myself sitting by the pool, checking e-mail, sipping on one of Armando’s amazing pina coladas. If only my office experience were similar.

All told, I simply cannot say enough good things about my vacation in San Juan del Sur and about Villa Noche. It was a lovely, lovely time that my family and I will always treasure. We can’t wait to go back again next year!

Well Villa Noche, run by former NBA player, Travis Knight is a rental property that has lots of potential. Some of the challenges that Travis' faces are in his control and some our just the nature of Nicaragua's infrastructure not being advanced yet. Villa Noche is located 2 1/2 hours from the Int'l airport in Managua on the Pacific coast. The house rental is in a very secure development about 200 feet directly above the Pacific coastline. Security is very good with one armed guard at the gate of the development and also another armed guard at the gate into the property itself.
Overall Nicaragua is not ready for tourists that expect any type of vacation you'd receive in Mexico, Costa Rica, or the Caribbean. Its infrastructure, such as roads, electricity, service, purchasing options, food availability is still a ways off.
The positives about Villa Noche are its incredible 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the very nice Infinity pool overlooking the Pacific. Transportation to and from San Juan can be done by the house staff, which is by truck 15-20 minutes (because of the roads) away, which makes a rental car not a necessity, you only pay for fuel at the end of the week. Travis is attempting to provide a 1st world experience in a country that is still experiencing tremendous 3rd world challenges.
What I write below aren't so much problems with the rental, but more of things that everyone should be aware of, more than anything.
First of all just getting to San Juan del Sur is quite an experience from the Managua airport; we used Adelante Express for transportation which I highly recommend. It was a very good experience; they met us after customs with a clearly marked sign. They were on-time, and some of their drivers even speak some English. They do the best they can. However the drive is a solid 2 1/2 hours.
For those who don't know Villa Noche provides cooking for all meals and daily cleaning services.
Regarding the house- The staff at Villa Noche is made up of 3 members Memo-house manager, Claudia-cook and cleaner, and Armando-overall assistant. I can't emphasize this enough if you do not know SPANISH, and I'm not talking about broken Spanish, do not stay at Villa Noche. This is a big deal. Also don't expect instructions from the staff when you arrive or even how or when the meal works. Overall we were disappointed the staff wasn't as friendly in attempting to talk with us, no hello's or goodbye's, they seemed very depressed. Obviously I don't blame them because the Nica government, and the US gvt. in the past 50 years hasn't treated the country or the people very well. Don't expect the staff at the house to take charge; they will wait to be told what and when to do things, such as making meals, fixing things, traveling to town. Again if you don't speak fluent Spanish then this makes things very challenging. I've traveled to Mexico, Caribbean, and Costa Rica, so I understand the "manana" mind-set/culture, but this is even more "manana".
The house was built 4-5 years ago and Travis' challenge is up keeping the house, it has many very modern bells and whistles, speakers in all rooms, wireless internet, pools, hot tubs, A/C units in bedrooms, big screen TV, DVD players. Problem is many of these things are broken or don't work. Part of the problem is the ability to have these things serviced or the availability to procure parts in Nicaragua. In particular the A/C working inconsistently made for some very uncomfortable sleeping nights.
Regarding the town itself, San Juan del Sur, this is a vacation town for locals; don't expect fancy gift shops, restaurants, Dive Shops, boat tours. Very simple and very basic. Shopping even for basic food and beverages is very different than even a 2nd world country. This is a small and unfortunately very poor tourist area that has lots of challenges with infrastructure.
Individuals that I can recommend traveling to Nicaragua are: backpackers, staying in hostels, very low key, no need for safe or organized attractions, but everything is very inexpensive. There are no 1st or even 2nd world amenities in San Juan. It’s very basic, unless you are staying at one of the 2 resorts Piedras Olos, or Morgan's Rock.
In conclusion the rates for Villa Noche are 1st world prices, but the experience in Nicaragua is truly still 3rd world, so you really need to understand what you are getting into.

My husband and I visited Villa Noche a month or so ago and found absolute paradise!

First and foremost, the view was breathtaking; that was what drew us to this particular vacation rental. The villa and everything in it -- from the pool and jacuzzi to the luxurious rooms -- were so spectacular and just what we needed. We loved having our own chef on-site because we didn't have to cook and could spend more time enjoying fishing, hiking and becoming beach bums. It's also close enough to the town that we could go and come when we wanted, but we certainly enjoyed the peace and solitude of the villa.

We had a great experience, and I don't think it would have been the same if we'd stayed in just some hotel. I would recommend the fabulous Villa Noche to anyone.

Sublime - the only word to describe a sunset viewed from Villa Noche. Watching the sky paint itself pink and orange as the sun drops away is the perfect end to a laid back day on the waves or the start of a lively night in SJdS.
There's not an uncomfortable spot in the place, and if there were, the adorable Memo and Armando would quickly see to it along with anything else you need to make your stay even more incredible.
The food is delicious - holding its own with any restaurant down the hill, and served with a view that leaves every table in town envious.
Whether your plans for Nica are surf, fish, or chill - Villa Noche is a once in a life time experience, best repeated often.
Thank you for a lovely time.
