Casa Oro Eco Hostel

I had so much fun at this hostel!!!!

everyday we would catch the truck to one of the surf beaches, it was extra... I dont remember how much, but it wasnt a insane amount.... one time the truck got stuck (there was a tropical storm)... which actually was super fun! hehe

I met some interesting people there, and had a really awesome time!

good thing we stayed upstairs though, beacuse since there was a tropical storm, everyone that was downstairs had to me moved out for the threat of flood....
the bathrooms were right in the middle of all the common area, so its umm not so private.... and if you need a shower, just be prepared that you might be seen when someone is walking upstairs.. hehe

but other then that, I really enjoyed the hostel... people were great, and it was the place to be...

The positives about this hostel is it was a good central place to meet people and start to have a few drinks, and the negatives, the toilet bin was not changed the whole time being there even when asked (one week) for 4 bedroom dorm, staff were rude and not helpful, and there are way too many rules! The rooms were small, noisy with no air flow.. and a nightmare to pay with credit card...

We stayed at Casa Oro for 3 nights earlier this year during a 6 month trip through Central and South America. Whilst the accomodation itself was reasonable (although rooms were stuffy with little or no natural light and ventilation), the staff were terrible - in fact, it was by far the worst place we stayed during our entire trip, and the only one I feel compelled to write about! We paid to take a surfing and fishing boat trip, led by the in-hostel surf instructor. Even by Central American standards it was poorly run. The boats were overcrowded and the fishing gear didn't work. We were advised by the instructor it was suitable for beginners, but when arriving at the surf sites it was clearly not. The instructor was the first in the water and paid no attention to any of the paying customers. Several people very nearly drowned. As a professional Dive Master I have never seen anything quite so terrifying as this. I was utterly shocked.

When back at the hotel we quietly and discretly complained to the hostel owner. We were immediately shouted at, accused of lying and generally made to feel like we were the ones in the wrong. And all this to simply try to ensure better safety for future guests!

In summary, NEVER AGAIN! Do NOT take a trip with these guys - pay the extra and go with professionals who care about your safety.

After reading positive reviews of this hostel in Lonely Planet Nicaragua I have been dissappointed by this hostel in more ways than one. The good thing it has going for it is it's location in the centre. However, the rooms aren't clean and on arriving to my room,a private one,it hadn't even been cleaned in a long while I would say. There is a note in the room to say 'If you want your room cleaned you have to ask and be present at the time of cleaning'. Firstly most of us are on holiday and don't want to spend a day waiting around to watch someone clean the room. Secondly the rooms should be cleaned anyway! I'm not after 5 star delux but some sign of cleanliness would be nice. The sheets on the bed were bloodstained also! The staff aren't particularly helpful and whilst advertised that they run the trip to the turtle sanctuary daily...they don't! This was my main reason for staying here. They won't run the trip for one person which in itself is pretty poor. I would be prepared to pay a little more and still go. Would I recommend this place,no! There are lots of other options here. Use Casa Oro only for the beach shuttle and that's it.

The dorms are cheap, clean and safe. Perfect location in San Juan. Great place to meet people. The owner speaks French, Spanish, English and is always trying to help his guests. A bar on the rooftop with a great view on the city. I only spent 2 days there and I wish I could have stayed more.

Casa Oro is a great place to stay. Very clean and nice rooms, a good kitchen and the best terrace in town. Prices are fair, due to the fact that San Juan del Sur seems absolutely overpriced. Especially the restaurants. Absolutely recommendable hostel. Enjoy!!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Casa Oro was the first hostel and surf school in San Juan del Sur. Before that it was an obligatory spot on the historic gold route through Central America. Today, Casa Oro is the first eco-hostel in San Juan del Sur, part of the Circulo Initiative, a family of for purpose businesses in pursuit of regeneration. Tourism growth and development often leave destructive side effects for cultures, communities and the environment. It doesn’t have to be like this though. We find inspiration in how nature works and use this as our compass for holistic creation. In everything we do, our aim is to leave places better than we found them. So far, it’s working. -- Just a hop, skip and a jump from the beach, Casa Oro offers a variety of budget-friendly accommodations designed with conscious backpackers in mind. We have both dorms and private rooms available. All of our dorm beds come equipped with privacy curtains for your convenience. The second and third floor boast a balcony that wraps around the entire building. A scrumptious breakfast is included with any stay along with free Wi-Fi, lockers (bring your own lock), free filtered water and access to a communal kitchen. Friendly vibes and hugs are also included at no extra charge. Our beach shuttles are conveniently located just outside the front door, surf school is downstairs and there’s even a RestoCafe/Bar, so all you’ve gotta do is roll out of bed and everything’s at your fingertips. We’ve also got donation-based yoga classes regularly. ... more   less
