Casa Oro Eco Hostel
Reviewed January 13, 2013

Spent New Year's in San Juan del Sur and wanted to stay somewhere fun. Casa Oro is in a good location and is where to go to get shuttles to the best beaches. They also ran the turtle hatching tour we went on, which was amazing. We had booked a private room, but were not aware that they only had one with separate beds. We were supposed to get that room, but they had accidentally given it away. They gave us a discount on our tour to make up for it. I liked the place in general although there are so many beds that it felt crowded and not everyone staying there was very friendly.

We had a private room over New years. The room and hostel were clean. You do have to request maid service-it is included- and must be present. The daily breakfast is good, but somewhat small portions. You can not get seconds. We asked for a private room with 2 beds, they forgot the 2 bed requests, which was unfortunate, but then gave us a $6 discount per person on a turtle viewing trip to make up for it. I also had major issues connecting to their wifi, as did many people, so go in expecting that. Also, excellent location, right in town center.
Overall, I recommend.

Stayed 5 nights at Casa Oro as it was recommended to me by another traveller. Its right in the centre of SJDS and easy to find from the bus stop. Dorms are a bit cramped but they each have their own bathroom attached which is nice (shared between 8) and plenty big. Lots of hammocks/chairs/tables in the communal area and a small kitchen for cooking. Breakfast is cooked for you each day and it was pretty good, the portions are generous. The rooftop bar is nice but it doesn't get going til quite late (9pm onwards) which is strange for a backpacker bar but I'm told that's how it is in all of SJDS. Didn't think the place had heaps of atmosphere, because the bar doesn't open til so late people weren't mingling over a drink much. Surfboard rental and shuttle to Maderas is cheap here, $10, could be best deal in town.

PRO's
- great central location
- cheap surfboard/shuttle to Maderas
- big tasty breakfast included in price

CON's
- not heaps of atmosphere

Room Tip: Bottom dorm rooms are cheaper due to 'early morning noise from breakfast' but I didn't f...

It was amazing!!
It started with a multimedia presentation that contained a lot of information about sea turtles and the Natural Reserve La Flor.
It was an adventure itself! we went to the reserve in a truck, and when we arrived at the reserve the guide give us red lights to be able to see the way up to the beach and then the turtles... once we got there she found us 4 turtles coming up from the sea. We could see all the process of her laying her eggs.. a lot of them!! it was such a good experience! After an hour the group decided to came back.
Thanks Casa Oro for a lovely moment!!!

We just took the famous night turtle excursion through the hostel. The drive at night to the beach was quite the experience, travelling in an open air truck over bumpy roads. At the beach we saw 4 turtles; arriving from the ocean, finding and building a nest, laying their eggs, and "stumping" on the sand to hide it from predators. The only bad part about the excursion was the guide who seemed out of place running a night excursion. She seemed very worried when guards patrolled close by and without explanation cut the tour short. We were at the beach for only an hour which was too short considering the drive to and from the hostel took an hour each way.

This hostel is cheap, rooms are clean and big enough. We paid 28$ for a double room. There is a very nice roof top bar where you can get cheap drinks and meet other backpackers from all over the world. Fortunately they close the bar at 11pm. Go to another hostel if you want to party the whole night long. They have a lot of useful information in the lobby (bus schedules, menu cards from different restaurants in town, etc.). American staff member Heidi is very helpful and friendly. You can also store your valuables in a locker and there is a place to drop off books. The only thing I didn't like (therefore one star less) is breakfast. You get almost nothing (three pieces of fruits and a tiny pancake). That is not enough for hungry surfers. If you want more you have to pay. And you have to stay in line to get your food. After eating again. You have to clean your dishes by your own. So you feel like you are in prison.

The goods: cleaned rooms daily.
Internet and nice computers
Hammocks
List of tours
Security guard
And the bar had a super nice bartender!
Reception staff are nice.
Good price!

The bads: the staff who serve breakfast were super rude. I understand people should ask for breakfast politely but I asked in Spanish (I'm a speaker) what was for breakfast and she told me to look at the board (where allegedly breakfast item was supposed to be posted) . It wasn't. So I just looked a little confused and her attitude was very unhelpful and bothered. She was like this every morning we stayed. Just wouldn't even acknowledge people so that they could even ask for bfast.

Kitchen kinda crappy.

Tip for horseback riding while staying in sjds: Ok I don't know how accurate this is but, my bf and I went to hotel Estrella and booked horseback riding through a guy named Guillermo. He told us that most hostels and hotels take large cuts when booking tours with locals for travelers. I would recommend skipping casa oros tour for horseback riding and go straight to hotel Estrella and book with the locals there. I think they get a bit more. And it was $28 for about three hrs of a great tour. Some Spanish req.

Room Tip: Allegedly the top floor dorms are cooler....not sure how true that was. They are a dollar more and h...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Casa Oro was the first hostel and surf school in San Juan del Sur. Before that it was an obligatory spot on the historic gold route through Central America. Today, Casa Oro is the first eco-hostel in San Juan del Sur, part of the Circulo Initiative, a family of for purpose businesses in pursuit of regeneration. Tourism growth and development often leave destructive side effects for cultures, communities and the environment. It doesn’t have to be like this though. We find inspiration in how nature works and use this as our compass for holistic creation. In everything we do, our aim is to leave places better than we found them. So far, it’s working. -- Just a hop, skip and a jump from the beach, Casa Oro offers a variety of budget-friendly accommodations designed with conscious backpackers in mind. We have both dorms and private rooms available. All of our dorm beds come equipped with privacy curtains for your convenience. The second and third floor boast a balcony that wraps around the entire building. A scrumptious breakfast is included with any stay along with free Wi-Fi, lockers (bring your own lock), free filtered water and access to a communal kitchen. Friendly vibes and hugs are also included at no extra charge. Our beach shuttles are conveniently located just outside the front door, surf school is downstairs and there’s even a RestoCafe/Bar, so all you’ve gotta do is roll out of bed and everything’s at your fingertips. We’ve also got donation-based yoga classes regularly. ... more   less
