“Pretty good value overall.”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

This was our first hotel in China, after 1 month of guest houses in Laos. We got Sarah from the Forrest Cafe to book it for us and she also wrote in Chinese, instructions for the taxi driver on how to get there from the bus station. Just as well, because it’s well hidden. What we liked; Mattress had some give and pillows soft; Rainmaker shower head as well as a telephone hand held shower. A curtain would have been nice, but the bathroom was big enough, that you did not have to evacuate the toilet roll first. Good wi-fi signal in our room. Mekong and Mie Mie Cafes are less than 200mtrs away if you want western food or translation. Communication with the receptionist was difficult because we didn’t speak each other’s language, but more importantly she cared and tried. So with a mixture of charades and pictures we got through. We paid ¥150 a night (plus a refundable deposit of ¥30 a night for the twin a/c room.)

When I was here in Dec 2011, the hotel had just opened. It was great, comfy, luxurious and a real treat for a change compared to all the basic places I had stayed in. Not much service, but perfect room and bath room.

Also stayed in the Jinglan Hostel for a night, which was decent, dirt cheap, but basic. They're very close to each other and obviously easy to confuse by name, but not by facilities

This review is for the Hotel, located a few steps away from the circular tea shop area behind Mekong cafe.

Very convenient location, decent sized rooms and bathroom. Very close to western cafes.

The pillows, however, reeked of the thousands of people that slept on them. Was pretty disgusting. Next time I check you a room before committing, i'll sniff the bedding and not just check whether it's been mopped!

Great basic hotel. Very clean, super comfy bed, and adequate water pressure. Convenient location in the center of town. The flat screen TV has one English news channel. Internet wi-fi is sketchy, it works about half the time. Staff doesn’t speak English, but it’s located near a western restaurant called Mekong Café, where you can information about tours, etc. Read Lily C's review below for directions, to make sure you get the right Jinglan.

We paid 150RMB for a double room, the bed was huge and comfortable, tv had english channels, room had computer, we were on the third floor so had no wifi, the bath room was really nice.
It was the nicest room we have stayed in during the last three months.

The pictures in this review are for the Jinglan hotel, which is not at the address listed. That is their old address and now the Jinglan guesthouse is there. If you are standing, looking at the door for thie address, look to your left and at the corner will be the Jinglan hotel. The management for both is the same.

Jinglan hotel: (5 *) Very modern boutique hotel like rooms with new furniture and fixtures for about 128 yuan (about 16 dollars in February 2012). Western style toilets which seem to be rare in this town.

Jinglan guesthouse: (3 *) Generally clean but more rundown rooms for 50 yuan. Cleaner than equitably priced options on Manting Lu. Included ethernet cable did not work, and as I am often told in China, it was obviously because my computer was broken. My computer has since un-broken itself since I left China for Laos. I found ants in my bag but cannot tell if it was from this place or the place I stayed in on Manting Lu the first night. Also had a bit of a money disagreement because I cannot read the words on the receipt and the lady at the front desk (who speaks little English) pointed to the receipt she forgot to update as proof I was wrong. So... keep an eye out on that Mandarin Chinese that you may or may not be able to read either.

Room Tip: Go to Jinglan Hotel not Jinglan Guesthouse.

A great, very reasonably priced, hotel in a very central location. Beautiful rooms with excellent facilities (especially the showers). Very helpful and friendly staff. Can be a little noisy at night due to the location, and there's no laundry facilities. Also, the staff do not speak English, so if you cannot speak Chinese contact Sara at the Forest Cafe and ask her to book for you.
