I borrowed a bike for 50rmb from Tara guesthouse and cycled out here on my own a couple of times. I think this is the best way to go if you just want to see the sights. You can choose to ride horses from any of the locals once out there. Cycling took about 1 hr (11km) each way and there are food options at the tourist stands once you arrive. Just cycle through the old town and you see all the many tents and horses! Great day event

should never have bothered going, we got off the bus, saw how touristy it is around here and got back on. If you want to go to the grasslands, go further afield if you have the time.

This was a side trip of our visit to Labrang Monastery. We visited the place in September, so there were hardly any tourist around. The grassland were turning yellow and there were hardly any sheep or cattle around. A few rows of shops selling souvenirs and a place to pick up a horse ride for a fee. Definitely not worth the visit.

Nomad Travel's day trip to the Sangke Grasslands gives you an authentic experience of the area unlike any other available option. Wandhikhar grew up in a nomadic Tibetan family and his knowledge of the culture and lifestyle of the local people runs deep. He makes sure to take you way past all the touristy and kitschy Han-run establishments and go deep into the area to see a real, unspoiled view of the area. You'll be able to have a meal at a local dining establishment, hike some of the peaks and even stop into a Tibetan family's tent for tea and snacks. These families are not expecting visitors, and Wandhikhar does not contact them in advance, making it a genuine and unique experience you won't ever forget.

I highly recommend contacting Nomad Travel (located inside the Nirvana Hotel in Xiahe)...this was an incredible experience that I will never forget!

Our tour with Wandhikhar from Nomad Travel (Nirvana Hotel) was outstanding! We learned about the lives of people who tend the yaks and sheep, visiting the home of a grassland family and enjoying the hospitality, yak milk tea, tsamba, and other treats. Got to hike along a ridge with a magnificent view, though the wind was pretty fierce that day.
