We have visited this campground on a regular basis for over 25 years. It has remained consistently excellent throughout the years and phases of our lives. We first went with several couples, returned later with very young toddlers, schoolage children, preteens, and now our girls are 14 & 15. The entire family continues to enjoy it.
The staff is very courteous, friendly and accomodating.
We know the layout of the campground by now and prefer the Meadowview section. There are freight trains, but we have a hard sided camper and can hardly hear them. To tell you the truth, when our children were very little toddlers, we made the mistake of last minute reservations and did end up on the hill (in a pop-up) near the R.R. tracks. I was afraid the children would wake up and I was afraid I'd never get them back to sleep. My husband and I did hear every train that went by, but the children slept all through the night undisturbed and did not even know what we were asking about in the morning...when we asked them if they'd heard all the trains. My husband enjoys walking up to the group camping area at the top of the shuttle bus station and watches for the trains to come by. If you camp in the lower areas or have a hard sided camper you probably will not be disturbed. Many families who visit the Lancaster County area are fascinated by trains altogether and there are many train attractions within driving distance.
Overall, this is a very family-friendly campground. No loud campers, music or profanity was heard. And these are the typical things that have kept us awake in the night at other campgrounds in other areas of our country. The restrooms were kept immaculate, Handsoap WAS available (which is #1 on my list of things to look for in a campground,) and toilet paper always available. Plenty of room in shower stalls, plenty of hot water.
Pool was clean and lifeguards on duty. Campstore on premesis was well stocked and coffee was an excellent value, buy their souvenier mug and refills were 53 cents, as desired.
The shuttle bus is valuable, park your vehicle and you never have to move it for your entire vacation. The shuttle takes you everywhere you need to go, air conditioned, clean and friendly.
Last but Not Least, the Price is fantastic when you take into account the shuttle bus, the availability of discounted admission tickets to the park (including evening Preview), free visit to the museum and gardens (including the Butterfly house (which rivals another one in a famous New York City Zoo.) The entire Hershey Highmeadow Camping experience is **** four stars recommended by us to you and your family.
