Owner description: Natural Splendor along the Swatara.Like many caverns in the Mid-Atlantic states, Indian Echo Caverns is a limestone cave. Cut through Beekmantown limestone, which is over 440 million years old, they were formed through the erosive properties of water. As time progressed, geological forces led to an "uplift" of the surrounding limestone, eventually allowing more and more water to flow through the formation. As the water flowed over the limestone, it began to create small crevices, these small crevices led to larger ones, and eventually, over a series of millions of years, it created the caverns as they are today. The temperature inside the caverns is 52 degrees year around.

Too hot? Stop by Indian Echo caverns. Feed the animals, take in the view, mine for gems and look around the gift shop for unique indian items. We love the caverns, it's quite interesting and a great place for the family especially when it's hot out. We've been there a few times and live nearby, and we will go back again!

IEC is an interesting tour for visitors of all ages. It's suitable for even kindergarteners. Guide was informative and articulate. Everything beyond the cavern, however, is hokey and overpriced - as is the tour itself. However, as it's in a tourist area (next to Hershey, PA), that's to be expected.

A quaint little find right near Hershey and Harrisburg, PA. The cave is not massive, but there is a lot to see in the tour. The formations are impressive, but especially is the clear water ponds that are found underground.

TIP: There are steps to climb up and down as with most caves and it can get cold as with most caves.

This was a GREAT experience. I would HIGHLY recommend! Not only did my husband and I enjoy the tour, our children ages 5 and 9 also liked it. They little stories told during the educational tour kept the kids interested and made the parents giggle. A great added touch!
After the tour it was nice to let the kids "pan" for gems/gold...another inexpensive adventure offered. They also have a small animal petting area and playground to keep the kids occupied until your tour begins.
LOVED IT! We will be back!

We've been twice now and have enjoyed it both times. Even though the store gets very crowded, the tours are limited to about 25 so it doesn't really feel to crowded. There are a lot of steps to go up/down to get to the cavern, so keep that in mind. The tour guides are very friendly and knowledgable. There are usually a few groups in the caverns at a time, so it can get tricky passing each other in the narrow areas. We (including a 4 and 6 year old) really enjoy the tour. There is also an area to "pan" for gems and such. It's an extra cost, but was worth it for our young kids. And there is a small area to see some animals.
