Selected by chance as a stopover en route to Boston airport and we really felt at home. Earlier review suggested top floor to avoid noise from above and selected 301 which had 2 large, comfortable beds but extractor fan noise above all night. Own fault since we could have selected other rooms all of which were as good as 301 if not better. Dinner was good (except for trout starter) and breakfast was a feast. Staff were very friendly and helpful and we will stay again when travelling that way.

Room Tip: Look at 212 and 214.

We stayed at the inn for only one night, but experienced a well-rounded, and relaxing time. The food was very good and nicely presented; we sampled duck, smoked trout, and artisan baked goods...to name a few of the items that we enjoyed. The chefs believe in working with local farmers when preparing meals. Frank, the pianist, added to the ambience in the dining room. He also provided us with information regarding some "must-see's" that we should be sure not to miss in the area. Later in the evening, we enjoyed a game of Scrabble in front of the large fireplace in the lobby.

Our family of 2 adults and 3 children (ages 13, 10 and 4) stayed at Settlers Inn for the long President's Day weekend. We sought a quiet, relaxing place where we could sit in a common area to read, play cards and other games. The Inn is lovely with an extraordinary attention to the details of Arts and Crafts decoration. It is splendidly maintained. Our room on the 3rd floor was spacious and (again) lovely. I would definitely recommend a room on the top (3rd floor), as it is very easy to hear other guests. I would not want to be below any other guests and certainly not on the 1st floor, near the bar.

The breakfast is delicious and ample, with choices of eggs, trout, bacon, sausage, fruit cup, french toast, granola and oatmeal.

We did indeed enjoy many a relaxing hour in front of the roaring fireplace, playing cards, playing chess and reading. During the day, the common area is quiet and very pleasant. In the evening, it is a staging area for the very busy bar and restaurant.

The location of the Inn is unfortunate, as mentioned many times in previous reviews. It sits adjacent to a very busy intersection. Hawley is also not a very appealing town. There are few dinner options in the area and aside from a handful of antique shops (some good, some horrible), there is little to do in town, which was okay for our purposes. Also, we were not there for snow sports, which are a distance away. There were many visitors at the Settlers Inn and the nearby Woodloch facilities (which offer swimming and fitness center to guests of Settlers Inn) from New York City. We weren't sure why New Yorkers were coming to Hawley. With so many out of town visitors, prices at restaurants were inflated and expensive.
We ate at the Alpine Restaurant in Honesdale (very good German food), Joe & Lorenzo's Pizzaria in Hawley (forgettable) and the Settlers Inn dining room. The latter was very expensive, and dare I say the emperor has no clothes, not that great.

Finally, it is also worth mentioning that our interactions with the staff were extremely variable. At breakfast, sometimes we were greeted pleasantly and treated like royalty (not that we expect or seek that), and other times we were growled at and the waitress would complain about all the customers and how she wanted us all to finish so she could go. Similarly, sometimes the bar staff was friendly, other ones were grumpy and made us feel like we shouldn't bother them with an order (when we were the only ones in the bar?). The front desk staff was unfailingly nice. But everyone else, well, you never knew if it was going to be a smile or a grimace.

I took my boyfriend to the Settler's Inn for a 'surprise' 35th birthday getaway in December. Having never been there or even seen it, I was crossing my fingers that everything would be as good as it seemed from website photos, descriptions, reviews, etc. I have to say, everything, from the moment we arrived was perfect! We enjoyed a beautiful time together there. From sipping wine by the warm lobby fireplace, to our quaint and comfortable room, to an exquisite dinner, and lovely breakfast...I could not have asked for a better result. Not only was the inn decorated for Christmas at the time, being it was December, but the service and ambiance was terrific. I cannot say enough about the food & service...top notch...and our server even went out of her way to make up a dessert tray, including desserts, a fresh pot of French pressed coffee and a birthday candle, personally delivered to our room...knowing it was his birthday. It was one of the best meals and times we have ever shared and I hope to return to The Settler's Inn again and again and again. A wonderful memory.

On the positive side, our meals (dinner and breakfast) were very good, and service by the wait staff was excellent. The dinning room is attractive, and the lobby with a roaring fire was cozy. The bar has a nice selection of craft beer. The staff was pleasant and courteous. Excellent wi-fi.

On the negative side, our room was TINY, uncomfortable, and not decorated very well. There was no closet and the armoire was about 24 inches x 24 inches with an ironing board and two robes in it. Needless to say we could not close the door to the armoire when we hung up our coats.

The lumpy bed ranks as one of the most uncomfortable beds we have experienced in many nights in historic inns and hotels. The walls are thin and we could hear every word and movement by the people in the adjacent room. The inn was nearly empty when we were there, and, strangely, they put another couple in the room next to ours. They did adjust our room rate by $25.00 when we complained. Charging $160. for this room is an insult. It should be used only when a member of the staff has to sleep over or as a broom closet.

The second floor where most of the rooms are was generally shabby, and, like the rooms, not very well decorated.

The inn has great potential, and it is gratifying that it is still in use. While we will not return as guests, we certainly would visit the restaurant again.

The Settlers Inn is very sorry to hear that your experience was not a pleasant one. We strive to meet and exceed the expectations of all of our guests and we are most saddened by the fact that we were not aware of the situation to respond while you were on property.

We have 21 sleeping rooms and no two are alike. We believe you stayed in one of the original rooms from 1927 that has not been altered keeping its historic integrity. We have kept some rooms of this size for those historians that frequent our Inn. We would have gladly moved you to one of our larger rooms if it met with your approval.

Likewise, the feather bed, one of our signature features in our sleeping rooms can be removed upon request. We have kept the featherbed at the Settlers Inn because it is so popular with most guests. Due to the demand, they are sold in our gift shop.

The value of the guest experience is very important to us. For our rate, guests receive a full breakfast, farm-to-table experience, for two people and access to our neighboring sports complex that includes an indoor pool and nautilus.

The Arts and Crafts style may not appeal to all. However, The Settlers Inn and Restaurant has received many awards over the years for the commitment to sustainability and quality. We are an AAA Four Diamond rated Inn and a member of Historic Hotels of America.

My girlfriend and I came here on the 26th for a one night getaway after the holidays. The Inn is charming and clean. The fire place in the den is beautiful and warm. We were able to relax with drinks and do crossword puzzles long after everyone turned in for the night. The staff was great and set us up with the football games at the bar during lunch after our snow tubing adventure at big bear (Big Bear snow tubing wasn't great for adults who dont ski or snowboard. I would recommend it for kids of all ages though.)
The staff was super friendly and accommodating. We were able to check in early and push back check out for an hour. They set us up with whatever we needed, and even clean the snow off and around my car.
The room that we stayed in, Rm 302, had a plus queen sized bed that was super comfortable and affords a great night of sleep. The rooms have 2 robes in them which came in handy and every room has TV with cable. We were able to get news and football games during the massive snowstorm that was crushing the east coast. The room was spacious and warm. We paid around $160 for the room and found it to be a great value. The bathroom was spotless and large. Great water pressure, in-room set up for wine in bed, and in-room thermostat rounded out the convenience and comfort.
The food at every meal was delicious. Lunch at the bar was reasonably priced for the quality of ingredients. The bar has a great wine and beer selection. Definitely check out the menus on their website. Dinner was equally delicious. We had the fillet mignon and diver scallops with shrimp cocktail (perfect amount of horseradish in the cocktail sauce). The chef sent out chicken liver and a truffle pudding that were spot on. Breakfast was included in the room charge. We had the oatmeal and country breakfast. Both were well proportioned and, again, delicious. They have a bird seed bread that is baked on the premises. If they sold bags of this bread, I would have packed my car with them.
The only draw backs were that the town of Hawley, was a bit dead due to the impending storm and that the closest mountain, Big Bear, left a lot to be desired.
I would highly recommend and will be going back in the warmer months when the lakes and hiking trails are open.

This impeccably maintained property provided the perfect getaway for our second wedding anniversary. The staff is extremely pleasant and helpful and the service was just outstanding. We felt very welcome throughout our stay. The food was magnificent and the drink menu in the tavern superb. Will definitely return.
