“Great honeymoon”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

It is what it is!!! An old building converted to a secluded romantic getaway. The roads in and out are off the beaten path, very quiet and secluded out back overlooking waterfalls. It's not the hilton, you will not get served or waited on from sun up to sun down. You don't come to places like this for service, you come for privacy. We brought our own wines and enjoyed the comfy chairs on the deck.

Room Tip: Get the upgraded rooms, you won't be disappointed.

Breathtaking views of water falls. Ambience in Bistro was outstanding. Hospitality was magnificent and service was superb. Food was an unusual mixer of delicious, gourmet tastings that had a variety of textures. Just a lovely place to enjoy good friends.

We read about the Ledges in Travel+Leisure and were excited about a getaway in the Poconos. While the falls were just as lovely as we had expected and the common rooms were very comfortable, we were very disappointed, particularly as we traveled to this area specifically for the hotel.

Reception was poor. The receptionist (a surly young British woman named Sophie) was unhelpful, both at check-in and check-out. She twice refused to give us a receipt even though we paid in cash, and then made a snarky comment when she did finally give us one.

The approach to the hotel had not been plowed, even though it was not snowing on the afternoon of our arrival, and the roads going out (including the hotel's driveway) were still not plowed by the following day. Likewise, the decks overlooking the falls (one of the nicest features of the property) had not been shoveled--not even the main one off the great room.

The rooms were clean and stylishly decorated, but very small; fortunately, the common areas were quite comfortable, with a fire, hot tea, etc.

The service was likewise disappointing at the onsite wine bar and bistro, Glass. My wife and I sat for a full twenty minutes with the dessert menu before someone came to take our dessert order, remarkable given the small size of the dining room and the limited number of diners that night. The food was tapas, and the chef was clearly trying to do interesting things, but falling short: the parmesian artichoke dip wasn't warm, the salad had too much dressing, the Asian squash dumplings were doused in soy sauce, and the kobe beef sliders (essentially tiny hamburgers) were overcooked. It came close to being a good meal, but wasn't.

We would also recommend against the Ledges if you want a leisurely morning. Breakfast (which wasn't clear from the website) is offsite at a sister property called the Settlers Inn and ends at 10:00. We hustled out at 9:35, slid out the exit road, and arrived at breakfast at quarter to 10. We didn't end up getting served for over 45 minutes because the service was so slow. Again, the setting was lovely--it was a very attractive arts and craft style inn with a roaring fire, but the food was mediocre. If you visit the Ledges, I'd recommend against buying the breakfast vouchers ($12.50 per person). Instead, lounge in your room, enjoy the falls, and then get breakfast elsewhere in town.

One final disappointment: We paid marginally more for a room that was supposed to have a view of the falls, but I had to stand on the windowsill and lean up against the glass in order to replicate the picture shown on the website. If you want a view of the falls from your room, get a second floor room on the falls side.

The Ledges has the potential to be the kind of place you'd want to return to, but the experience that we had--particularly on the service front--will make it unlikely that we'll revisit the Ledges or the Settlers Inn.

Dear George,

Firstly allow me to apologize for the length of time it has taken me to reply to your review - the management have re-read it to decide best course of action.

Having spoken with Sophie, she is mortified that she came across as surly and snarky, as this is not the image she intends to project.

We are looking further into the snow plow issue, but due to Ledges Hotel being on a natural descent by the waterfall, it does tend to ice up quicker here.

Again we are very sorry for the unsatisfactory stay with Ledges Hotel and at Glass Wine Bar and Bistro, and will put all your comments to positive use for the future.

Best wishes

In the aftermath of Sandy, we stayed at Ledges (again) to thaw from a week without heat and/or electricity at home! The staff was as I remembered them:friendly, accomodating and just delightful! They even remembered that we had gotten married onsite and moved us to our honeymoon suite (the second night) of our stay! The hotel offers a tranquil setting, great food, complimentary continental breakfast and the opportunity to disconnect from the world. They also offer (for a nominal fee) day passes to two spa/health resorts, nearby. A slice of paradise.

Room Tip: Rooms 202 and 204 are two story suites that overlook the falls!

It's 11:00 PM, I am really tired. We booked last minute and it sounds like they are building a damn house in the next room. The radio they are playing might as well be in our room it's so loud. When the neighboring room on the other side turns on their light the exhaust fans sounds like a coffee grinder. The place maybe beautiful but the walls are paper thin. If you want a hotel room you can actually sleep in this isn't your place.

I really spent time looking for a nice hotel in the Poconos -- that wasn't over-priced but was well decorated (we are both designers!). This one topped it! Wow...The photos online show all the beauty. We went in the fall and enjoyed the outside firepit, meeting new people, sipping coffee in the beautiful great room by the fireplace, beds were really comfy, everything was VERY clean and the staff was unbelievably nice. We went during the week and I think the hotel was relatively quiet so we were upgraded free of charge to a room with a view of the falls. My husband and I went to the top deck and looked over the falls for quite some time. I am definitely coming back here...They also own Settler's Inn - which I am sure is fantastic, and a small delicious coffee shop called Cocoon, just up the hill. This is the place to go to escape the world...

Room Tip: You might want to ask for a room with a view of the falls..but honestly, there are 5 decks that you...

Although this hotel was a little pricey - it was beautiful!
The rooms we had were very spacious. The only think I really disliked were the stairs, but once you got to the room upstairs it was worth it!

The beds although really low to the ground so comfortable and I think this was the first hotel I've been in that you could actually smell that the sheets were clean and fresh!

We were there for a wedding and from when we arrived to when we left it was perfect service, cleanliness and the atmosphere was great - especially in the fall season when the trees were changing.

The fire at night on the back patio was great and since the whole wedding party took up the hotel it was a party the whole weekend.

Room Tip: I would highly recommend the two bedroom suite because it has a full kitchen, but we had the one bed...
