“Big Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

Well maintained grounds, attractive to drive up to. Comfy bed, great bed linens/coverings, nice leather chair to sit in for a spell while winding down. Room issues would cause me to chip a half-star off their current rating. My first room was "almost" finished by housekeeping, and it had a very loud A/C fan, the room they offered next had a quiet A/C fan and a shower curtain rod hanging loose on the wall with some mold like discoloration in the tub caulking. Arriving late I was too-tired to hike all the way back to reception to try for room three. It's an older property yet smells fresh throughout. Some wear and tear evident as might be expected for the properties age. Good location, plaza shopping and the big mall are within easy reach. Breakfast is not included, there is a full service restaurant and bar however. Great looking pool (viewed from three stories above). If the occasion arose I'd try them again.

I stayed here a few years ago and came back again for my daughter's cheerleading competition in April. Got a good rate and Sheraton took care of my request for a crib in the room. Front desk staff was personable and friendly upon arrival. I enjoy Starwood properties because of the comfortable beds.

The Pros
*Sheraton beds - best in the business. You will sleep great!
*Water pressure in the shower was refreshing
*Marketplace/gift shop that was open 24 hrs. Last Time I came it was in 'guest room' literally, now its spacious and there is a nice selection
*Room service is somewhat expensive but I didn't feel overly price-gouged like I might at other hotels. Kid meals were reasonably priced. The food quality...average (see Cons)
*Having an indoor pool on-site

Cons
*The double sofa bed that was advertised as a "King + Double Sofabed" was nowhere close to a double. When you open it up It was a twin mattress. No way that thing sleeps 2 small children. Should've kept my room with 2 doubles.
*Hotel can use a refresh. You can tell this hotel sees its fair share of traffic. Elevator had rubber protective covers in the doors pealing off. Exposed fixtures in certain areas.
*Pool was freezing
*Food from room service was average. Some of us made out okay, but avoid the pizza.
*This might not be entirely on the hotel, but there were groups of other cheer teams here and the parents let their kids run wild in the hallways...screaming and yelling at all hours, knocking on doors, slamming doors, tumbling in the hallways. Realize its hard for a hotel to stop it so I didn't go the route of calling the front desk. Just yelled at a few parents to pay attention to their kids and to actually 'watch' them and teach them respect for others, especially in a hotel environment. If there is a group called "The Cheer House" staying in your hotel (and on your floor), ask the front desk for a higher floor.

So if you can look past some of the wear & tear in the common areas, and you want a friendly staff and a clean, comfortable bed, close to Hershey attractions, this place won't disappoint you.

Room Tip: Avoid the 'double sofa' option if you need it to sleep 2 people.

There was a lot going on at the hotel over the weekend, but it was spread out so nicely and everyone was able to have their own space. The pool is lovely. The restaurant is a bit pricey, but good. Parking was plentiful and the location is ideal.

Lets start by saying this is not a good hotel, more of a water park with a few bedrooms, if on business and you want a good night sleep forget about it. the pool it open until 11 and you WILL have a herd of loud screaming children (and thier parents)to try and sleep around until the pool closes. The food is expensive and not very good with room service being as hilariously overpriced as one might expect. The interior is tired and dated, and on several floors downright laughable. (drunken clown must have been hired to paint here)
I would recommend any crappy Motel 6 over this Sheraton, at least you get what you paid for. Simply put a hotel is for sleeping not swimming. Maybe if they could keep noise levels down I might have had a different experience this visit was unacceptable despite the friendly staff.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep make sure your room is as far away from the pool as possible.

Here is the thing about Harrisburg: for the most part, unless you want to go outvto Hershey, a business traveler only has 3 full service name brand hotel choices: the Hilton downtown, the Raddison Camp Hill, and this Sheraton. So when you consider the condition of the other two options, this Sheraton is not too bad. When you look at this property in general, however, there are areas of improvement. Starting with the opportunities, my club level room was a little warn. The fabric in the furniture was stained, the remote control has seen better days, electricity provisions for personal devices by the bed not modern, the bathroom is tiny. In fact it's hard to stand in front of the mirror without the back of your legs brushing against the side of the toilet bowl. The shower plumbing is totally inferior with lose pipes and flimsy controls. Towels are rationed. The more positive aspects: very nice lobby and small restaurant, quick check in, club level lounge, although small, is well provisioned. Big fiat screen in the room and there is a nice balcony allowing fresh air. Overall, the property could use a bit more attention but as I said earlier, its the best choice of the most obvious three options. If a real, full service top brand hotel ever opens in this city, this hotel and the others in town will have to step up their game.

Room Tip: Stay away from wing B. request a room in wing A.

Second time in this hotel, much neglect was noted in the guest room. The desk lamp was broken, with the broken light switch next to the lamp (clearly housekeeping must have seen this, or else they did not clean the room). Peeling wall paper, a phone 'placard' which is completly curled up and a joke (not an important item in itself, but it does speak to the obvious neglect of room maintenance). Also, as a top-tiered SPG guest, the recognition of my status was zero, I was assigned a lobby-level room (rather than the usual higher-floor room I have earned and come to expect). Overall, I am very happy with the Sheraton brand, but this particular property is showing signs of serious neglect, both in the physical maintenance as well as the SPG-earned benefits.

There is something about expressways, along with the shopping malls and chain merchants that always seem to grow next to them, that suck the life and charm from a neighborhood. While this makes for good value and convenience while staying in such an area, you must drive (and I emphasize the words MUST DRIVE, as there is no way to walk or take mass transit) to get to a place where you'll want to do anything but eat, sleep, and sit in your room. The Sheraton Harrisburg is far above the typical cookie-cutter lodgings that end up in these places, but you can't overlook what's surrounding you.

Stayed here for three nights during a convention in downtown Harrisburg. Got such a great deal due to blind bidding that it would have been cheaper to take a cab, twice a day, than to stay downtown. Service was top-notch despite our paying way below rack rate.

Our room was quite spacious, with a VERY comfortable bed. It had full bath, phone, radio-alarm, AC (surprisingly loud!), mini-fridge, hair dryer, iron & board, coffee-maker, and TV with 39 channels plus pay-per-view. The room was clean, well-maintained, and quiet (except for the AC). Two bottles of water were provided, the smaller one "with our compliments" and the larger one costing $4.
In-room wi-fi was free. There was also an ethernet portal on the desk, but it did not work on our laptop, and even tech support was surprised that we wanted to use it. It seemed strange to me that one would place an ethernet connection and then have nobody who knew how to get it to work.
The tub was a bit of disappointment; it seemed to be decades old, and its controls for temperature and flow rate were not easy to make work.

The hotel featured an inviting lobby (good place to relax with their TV or their many books), larger than usual business center (with printer!), restaurant, bar, pool, spa, exercise room, and a 24-hour gift shop that sold a variety of munchies. The restaurant is open for breakfast, but you must pay for this meal. Note that all parts of the property are smoke-free. There is no charge for parking.
Starwood seems to have introduced an offer that some may like: if you forgo ALL maid services (ie, nobody will enter your room), and leave a sign on your door to that effect by 2am, you'll get a coupon for $5 worth of food in the hotel. As you can buy food at the gift shop, this (in effect) means free munchies if you can do without maid service for a day.

The hotel is right off I-83, about five miles from downtown Harrisburg and eleven miles from Hershey. It is adjacent to a large mall with several large chain stores and restaurants. Being near an interstate exit, there are other chain restaurants nearby.

The hotel seemed to be designed for business travelers and meetings, but a family or a couple can enjoy this place just as much. If you can get a good price and don't mind driving to get to where you want to go, this Sheraton is a good choice.
