“Good place for dinner”
Reviewed July 28, 2014

We had dinner here one night mainly because it was across the street from our hotel. We walked in the bar side first, which smelled distinctly of smoke. We then went in the restaurant side and found it to be quite lovely.

We were there for an early dinner, so the restaurant was not crowded at all. We had excellent service and the food was very good. I had chicken picatta, which was light and very good. The olives in the picatta were a nice surprise. My husband had the eggplant parmesan, and in his words; the sauce tasted like the dumped some medium salsa in with the marinara sauce. Other than that, the meal was good.

Prices I thought were reasonable for the portions.

“The restaurant was great; stay out of the bar if you don't like smoke”
Reviewed July 3, 2014

I had read earlier reviews about this restaurant and the biggest complaint was about the smoke. Since we're not smokers either, I was a bit wary, but decided that the food reviews made this worth a try. The bar is, in fact, smoky, but there is a closed door that separates it from the restaurant and there was no smoke there. The food was very good. I chose the special of a filet mignon, crab cake and portobello mushroom, with asparagus and salad. My husband had the prime rib and the same sides. Mine was good, but his was better. He chose the queen cut (smaller of the 2 offered) and it was huge. The wine list had many reasonable choices. Service was excellent, too.

“Excellent Choice for Dinner”
Reviewed July 3, 2014

We were passing through Harrisburg on our way home from a trip. We stayed at a local hotel for the night and found this restaurant on Trip Advisor. It was only about 1/4 mile from our hotel, and we were tired of driving, so it was perfect.

When we looked at the reviews, we were surprised at the range of views. Many really liked the food and place. Some were very negative because of smoking in the establishment that ruined their experience. The good food reviews won out, and we decided to try it. When we went in, we asked to be seated as far as possible from the smoking area. We were then delighted to find out that smoking is only allowed in the bar area. There is a totally separate dining room that is served by another entrance to the building. We were escorted into there and found a nicely decorated, smoke free, and quiet dining room. It was very nice.

As to the food, the positive reviews were spot on. We shared the calamari for an appetizer. It was fresh and very good. The portion was easily large enough to be an appetizer for two people. Then, for the main course, I had the prime rib. It was spectacular. I had the queen size cut because I was not all that hungry after the calamari. The slab of meat that came out was about 1 1/2 inches thick and covered over a half of a large plate. All in all, it must have been about 2 pounds of meat. Some of it came back to our room, and helped with our breakfast the next day. My wife had a daily special, which was a tower made of filet mignon, a grilled portobello mushroom and a crab cake. It was really good. The crab cake was much better than I expect from crab cake in a dish like this. It was virtually all crab and spices.

Throughout the meal, the service was very good--attentive but not hovering. The wine list was quite decent, and had several choices at reasonable prices. We had a bottle of Chianti Classico that complimented our meal well and didn't break the bank. With all this food, we did not have room for dessert, although several looked quite good.

If we were going to be back in Harrisburg, we would certainly go back to Gilliagan's--and sit in the dining room.

“Nice place for dinner”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

This is an upscale dining room with a bar attached. One exterior door for each section.
Please note - - smoking is permitted in the bar area but not the dining room. The dining room is much like Carrabas or other chain Italian restaurants but with some local touches.
The food was good and prices fair for the portion sizes. Dinners average $14-$20 each.
We were staying in a hotel down the street so the location was good for us.

“Best place in town!!!”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

Gilligan's has anything from hamburgers to great steak and seafood dinners ~ domestic beer to elegant wines and cocktails. It has a great atmosphere with sports TV and / or music. Friendly bartenders and waitresses compliment this clean and relaxed bar. I never go to Harrisburg without stopping at Gilligan's at least once!
