First of all, the bar for "Fine Dining" in central Pennsylvania is pretty low. Golden Sheaf has for years been considered one of the best. On the positive side, the food and table service last evening were excellent - couldn't have asked for better. On the other side, there were several details which hurt the experience. One, at check in, one of the staff reeked of tobacco smoke. Got another major whiff when he sat someone near us. Not a good start to a dining experience. Suggestion: when "on duty," forget the smoke breaks unles you shower and change clothes thereafter. Second, the room is much too small for the number of place settings. They utilize the dreaded "banquette against the wall" fronted by tables for two, much too close together. Fortunately, the one next to us was not occupied; if it had been, our neighbors would have been in our laps. Finally, even at 6:30 PM on a Saturday there was present the loud, obnoxious drunk who felt he needed to break out in loud, raucous laughter at each of his (to his perception) witty remarks. No intervention by the staff. In summary, a restaurant with food that good and waitstaff that attentive should do better than 3 stars. Needs some attention to detail.
