Individual displays were well done and a good mix of at-a-glance info, deeper detail, artifacts, videos and story panels. But I found it confusing to follow a flow from room to room or to get a chronological sense of the Civil War. Wondered if this was intentional - to give the visitor a sensory overload experience & confusion of war.

I was in the Harrisburg/Heshery, PA area for a conference. I saw a pamplet for the museum in the attractions' rack in the hotel and made plans to stop there after my conference. An outstanding museum!! I was amazed at the exhibits and the artifacts! On this particular day there was a historical presentation (outside) by a Maryland Confederate regiment. I was impressed with the effort to tell the stories of the Slaves, the Union and the Confederacy. It's a "national" museum so efforts are made to be impartial. The museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian. I was there for about 90 minutes which I spent on the second floor where the tour begins. I did a quick walk-through of the first floor which is a shame because there is so much that deserved the visitor's full attention. I hope to make another trip to Harrisburg specifically to visit this museum!!

This is the fourth or fifth time we visited this large, comprehensive museum sitting at a lovely location overlooking Harrisburg. The museum does a good job presenting most apects of the war--what led up to it, the war itself and what happened after. The are many artifacts and videos to be seen, the best vdieos are brief descriptions of each battle by famed Civil War scholar, James Robertson. shown in different sections of the museum.

The main problem I have with this musem, as well as some other museums, are the ways some exhibits are presented. In some areas the lighting is so dim that it is too dark to read the printed material. Some information panels are low to the ground, many 2 to 3 feet above the floor, so you have to bend over to try to read it (maybe they should have that information at a reasonable height so it could be read it more easily). In the current exhibit on exchanging prisoners of war, some of the tiny printed material was behind the cases making it impossible to read (they might consider placing that information in front).

Even with some of the poor presentation, this is a terrific museum where you can learn much about the Civil War, from both sides, and should not be missed. The museum is open daily, with late hours on Wednesdays. Admission is $11 for adults and $10 for seniors. We went using a Groupon coupon which was $11 for two persons.
