“Great architecture, but extremely limited hours”

State Library of Pennsylvania
Ranked #26 of 57 things to do in Harrisburg

State budget cuts have taken their toll on the Pennsylvania State Library. It is no longer open on any evening, nor on Saturdays, and has very limited hours during the work week. It has a fantastic collection of rsearch materials, but they are difficult to use when the library is open so few hours.

The building is thoughtfully decorated in a manner reminiscent of the height of the Art Deco movement in the early twentieth century. There are marble entryways and gilded lighting fixtures that resemble sculpture rather than electrical devices. The floor resembles a stone parquet-like triangle design. Around the corners, on the ceilings and on the walls are raised reliefs with figures from history and from nature. The rich art theme is carried through into the library itself. When entering the main reading room the sight of the atrium with the balconies and alcoves clustered around it makes a dramatic impact. The floors of the main reading room are decorated as well with small repeating shape and flower motifs. It is great to explore and take in the enormity of the wealth of information available on these shelves.

The very helpful and knowledgeable staff here will guide around the library's many treasures. Especially notable is their statewide newspaper collection and the Genealogy and family history collections. Don't forget to look up to view the decorative ceiling!

The genealogical, periodical, and law libraries are first rate. The main library collection is broad ranging and with excellent specialties such as map collections and Pennsylvania history. The main library is organized in a fascinating five story atrium with the stacks on balconies surrounding the atrium accessed by narrow stairs or ancient lifts. The circulation and research staff are very helpful. There are many desktop PCs available for online research as well. The genealogical library is world famous, and the lesser known periodical library has one of the most comprehensive periodical and newspaper collections outside the Library of Congress. This library located in the Forum Building is a hidden gem among the capitol buildings in Harrisburg. You can also research the collections online at http://pilot.passhe.edu:8020/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First
