Owner description: Teddy Roosevelt declared that this Italian Renaissance-style building was “the handsomest building I ever saw”. Indeed, the State Capitol, with its vaulted dome and grand staircase and the murals and painted floors inside, is thing to behold.

This is one of the most beautiful buildings in PA.,both inside and out. Tours of the building are available every day, except certain holidays. You can also tour this do not miss attraction on your own. There is street parking at meters and some parking garages nearby. Meters are free on Sundays. There are many dining options available--the cafeteria in the Capitol, as well as local places nearby (although many of the restaurants are closed on Sundays).

In the heart of Harrisburg, a pretty little city with many Victorian buildings, is the very grand and very elegant Pennsylvania State Capitol Building.
This edifice gives the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. a run for it's money ... it is very large, grand and imposing. A visit is absolutely free of charge and there are guilded tours which are also free. I visited on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Aug. 2004, and it was great. The dome was copied after Michaelangelo's dome on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and the gorgeous marble staircase was inspired by the one in the Paris Opera House. The building was filled with stunning works of art (Including portraits of Washington at Valley Forge and Lincoln at Gettysberg ... get the Pennsylvania connection??!), murals, mosaics, etc. The place was just breathtaking in it's opulence and grandeur. This building was built in the first few years of the 20th century in the Beaux Arts style, and the craftsmanship was superb. It could not be reproduced today. Best of all, it's all free!
