Owner description: Teddy Roosevelt declared that this Italian Renaissance-style building was “the handsomest building I ever saw”. Indeed, the State Capitol, with its vaulted dome and grand staircase and the murals and painted floors inside, is thing to behold.

Great spot in the middle of downtown. The inside is gorgeous with tours offered throughout the day. The rotunda is one of the finest I've ever seen!

I shadowed my State Rep a little over a year ago. The PA Capitol is gorgeous and I'd say it even rivals the federal Capitol.

“What Part of Free Don't You Understand”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

Perhaps the best free tour we have ever taken is at the Pennsylvania State Capitol. It was a slow day in Harrisburg, so we were the only two people on the tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and very informative. He described all the art work, structures, renovations, etc. Aside from the great tour description, the structure itself is really quite nice. The Senate and House chambers are very ornate. Also, the furnishings, including desks, are the originals from 1906. I am no student of architecture and interior decorating, but I did enjoy the tour, much to my wife's surprise. Besides, it is free!

“Perfect”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

One of the most beautiful buildings i've had to pleasure to visit. The main entrance atrium is pure white, with columns stretching to an immense dome, filled with murals representative of Pennsylvania. An impressive curved, stone staircase drew the eye up toward a gallery of arched openings below the dome. Embedded in the terracotta tiled floor where emblems, also representing the state. We decided to take the free tour. Our guide was very friendly and informative and happy to answer all of our many questions. There were only 3 of us in total in the tour group, so it felt very private. The House, Senate and Supreme Court were all well preserved and awe inspiring in their detail. Crystal chandeliers suspended from beams of gold leaf, interspersed with murals of the rich and famous, and events important and providing inspiration to the elected representative sat in their seats below. Everyone, from the security to the receptionist, staff and presumably lawmakers wandering the halls were very friendly and welcoming. The history of the building and the state in which it is capitol were apparent in every detail. The exterior impressive too, with hints of Saint Peter's in Rome, and the Capitol in Washington D.C. The Green dome and roof slates added a touch of uniqueness. If you're interested in architecture or history, this isn't something you want to miss.
